Frigate NVR - Cameras?

I'm looking at setting up security cameras for my home. Have been researching Frigate but finding little information on what cameras are being used by people. Other than reolink looking to be a big no. Anybody running this and can recommend their cameras? Or am I better off looking at a propriety system with their own NVR? Would like to also integrate with homeassistant.

Thanks

Reolink cameras support ONVIF so they can work directly with HA using HACS integration (don’t even need an NVR). Frigate is cool but I personally haven’t tried it.

    • Yeah, I have been looking at that too. It may be the easiest way to go if I can't get frigate working.

Most reolink cameras work perfectly fine with frigate. I'm using one right now and have 4 more on order

        • Can you supply the model number of the camera you have working? And which ones have you ordered?

  • Frigate looks like you need IP cameras? Are you looking to go down the IP camera route? It seems like it would be a costly setup with IP Cameras and other supporting hardware than the server for the Frigate setup……

It depends on what you want to achieve and how detailed you want things? It could be cheaper to get Ring Cameras and set those up.

Personally, I have a few UL Tech Systems and they are pretty good for having a set of eyes. It doesn't have the bells and whilst, but suitable for what I want. I just have a Ring Doorbell for the front door stuff.

I am not on a busy road or street and WFH full time, so mine are just for a set of eyes which I have streamed to my TV in the my office.

Frigate camera issues are normally linked to the bitrate being too high. Reduce the bitrate and you'll be ok. Hikvision / dahua are normally pretty popular.

What is the issue with Reolink cameras & Frigate? I have 3 of them running well on Frigate, just need to make sure it is a model with RTSP/RTMP (i.e not the E1 and battery powered ones).

    • There's little information but what there is suggests reolink don't play well. However, your answer is what I was looking for. Someone who actually has both reolink and frigate. May I ask what model cameras you have?

I have this one on my driveway: https://reolink.com/au/product/reolink-duo/

The DUO seems to have reasonable built in detection but I prefer the Frigate interface.

And a E1 Pro at my front door.

        • Yeah nice. Been looking at the duo but the poe version. I think a lot of the issues with reolink has been with the 8mp version using h265. Then again I am not sure as googling really doesn't bring up much. Best bet would be to just buy and tinker away until it gets working…
Do you use a google coral with frigate? I was offered a dual coral m2. a year ago (or so) for $50 but I had no idea what it was and didnt take it. If only I could have predicted their future lack of availability.

          • @Bruceflix: I don't have a coral. I am running one of these https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/521256 with home assistant / frigate / plex etc. It seems to work well enough with the 3 cameras, I use the sub feeds so its not too much of a strain.

The only issue I have it will occasionally alert on a bird as a person, I think I could fix that by filtering by size but haven't got around to it. Detection can take a 4-5 seconds sometimes which I think the Coral would help with but I don't think anyone has ever made it to my front door without me being aware.

            Everything works very reliably.

@Bruceflix: I have a coral on order since SEP last year. Will be worth it eventually.

I also have reolink and frigate working fine.

Most things I read suggest reolink is fine. There are specific reolink cameras listed as not working in the frigate docs I believe.

My cam is a 520. I have the new duo and some 520As in the mail.

            • @SgtBatten: Yeah, I'm looking at the 520a's. they seem to be incredible bang for buck. with the 520 working there seems no reason why these also wouldn't work. Let's hope ozbargain can conjure up a sale for these. Currently $80 from reolink.com

              • @Bruceflix: You just missed a sale on AliExpress unfortunately.

I got 2 520as for 108 and the duo 2 for 160 and then a little cash back on top.

                They ship from aus too

                • @SgtBatten: D'oh! That's a really good price. Problem with that price is then I'd buy way more than i need…

It works fine with the 4MP HikVision DS-2CD2347G2-LU. It's one of their ColorVu cameras that have absolutely amazing low-light sensitivity which gives you a color image in low light.

It replaced a 2MP HikVision turret camera and gives a clear colour image where the old 2MP has to switch to b/w IR.

I still run a second NVR connected to the same camera though. I used to run Milestone XProtect in a Windows VM but switched to Avigilon for its lower CPU usage.
