good quality diamond engagement ring approx $1000...possible?

This is a genuine appeal for assistance :)

I have no idea about rings / diamonds / jewellery, etc…
but was wondering if it's possible to get a nice / decent diamond ring for under $1000?!

I have a feeling there's a big difference between a good jeweller vs michael hill, etc…but I wouldn't know where to start! Anyone have recommendations for a trustworthy seller who isn't a total rip off???

My girlfriend is very low maintanence (oh happy day!) so I'm sure she'll be happy with anything, but it'd be nice to get something quality…

Am I kidding myself with diamond, or should I be looking at some other substitute for this price?

Thanks in advance!!

p.s. I guess I'll need advice about wedding bands too….

Have a look at these guys mate.

They also have a lot of info about diamond shopping on their site, settings, cuts, clarity, etc. Good to read up on this stuff before making a purchase, you only buy one after all.

  • great site! and suprisingly affordable too…
    thanks heaps for your help

  • It's definitely possible, but really depends on a lot of factors. Do you want to buy her gold, white gold, platinum..? How big do you want the diamond to be? The size of the diamond is probably the most obvious difference in price when shopping for rings in stores, however if you want to spend a bit more money then you can look more into the cut and clarity, etc. Basically the bigger the diamond (as well as the other things mentioned), the more expensive. If she's relatively low maintenance, I'm sure she would love anything you choose for her, so with this in mind I really do think you should be able to find something in your budget, but it will be a relatively small diamond. Don't forget though, in years to come, if you/she wants to update the diamond you can do this :) I can't give you any advice on stores or websites, but if you do end up shopping around in the shops (which I honestly think is fine as long as you get a good deal), keep your eye out for sales as the prices usually go down a fair bit depending on the store (e.g., I have a friend who found the perfect engagement ring but it was 1K over his price range, a day later the store called to say it had gone down to his budget!) Good luck! :)

    • I'm thinking white gold, 0.25-0.30 carat…i'd prefer princess shape, but I think round is more likely now (after researching online). I've discovered that brian gavin diamonds and james allen seem to be the more reputable dealers and have better quality cuts… still within my price range! 0.30 ct with 14K white gold band for approx $1K.

I will check out retail stores around town but based on what a friend recently paid for his ring, I have my doubts!

      cheers

  • Go with blue nile. I got my fiancee's ring from Blue Nile. It was great

  • Definitely don't use a retail jeweller, you will get much further having a ring made. What city are you in?

I had my ring made by an awesome jeweller and the ring is worth more than double what I paid, before I decided to get mine made I went to do a price comparison and the similar style and same cut and clarity but half the carat size was more expensive than what I paid…

  • hey yanimarj,

    I'm in Sydney.

based on 24 hours of research I think I'm looking at 0.30 ct round (colour G-I, clarity VS1-VS2) in a simple 14K white gold setting.

    where is your jeweller located?

  • He is in Lane Cove and his name is Tim Blake - if you are on FB you can contact him through his page - Tim Blake the Jeweller. I truly cant recommend him enough!
