Share Your Personal Experiences with Residential Internet Providers

Currently looking for a new internet provider.

I would like to hear any personal experiences you had with dealing with providers you have had throughout your lifetime. Could be customer service experiences, a dip in speed around certain times of day, ping when playing certain games, or whether or not a you think you got a good deal. Anything relating to residential internet providers.

Please include where you are based in AUS (eg; West Vic) as it makes it easier for others to base a decision.

  • Previously had Dodo. Their customer service was shit at the time we had it and they put us on a contract when we asked not to have a contract. Switched to TPG when nbn was in our area and currently on it. They are alright, but there was occasional internet loss at around 8:00pm and 12:00am. FTTP is now available in our area of WEST VIC so looking for a new plan with a good deal.

I do work for Telstra, but I’m on their HFC 100/20 plan, and get consistently 115/17. Haven’t had any issues (touch wood)

    • +1

I've heard their customer service is pretty bad.

It has gotten a lot better as most (if not, all) their inbound calls are in Australia now

But one of the perks of working for them (besides the epp discount), is I know who to contact if I have a problem

        • So kind of Telstra to do that, after turfing 100-1000s of onshore staff since 2018.

        • Not to mention, you have personally helped some of us out on the past via DM 👊

We are with TPG; only provider-specific issue has been with our landline service randomly dropping out, which they rectify reasonably quickly when advised.

The remainder of our internet issues have been related to NBN. But, TPG is good at proactively advising us of outages detected and when resolved.

More Telecom (over Vocus) FTTC 50/20 ($53.9/month) : SE VIC : always getting around that speed (current speedtest 53.65/19.15)

Been with a lot of NBN providers throughout the years (FTTN 100/40 in NSW)

Telstra: Provided 50/20 when I paid for 100/40, eventually they gave me a refund after bouncing through different call operators. When moving to them either they or Telstra messed something up and was left without internet for 3+ days.

Aussie BB & Superloop: Decent, used them through the lockdown and the congestion was quite high, especially at peak times making the connection almost unusable.

Exetel: Support was pretty bad, connection went down frequently for long periods and took hours on hold to contact them.

Launtel: Best ISP I've used, helpful support, transparent and most consistent connection, very low ping to US. Still using them to this day.

I can vouch for Launtel too.

Have been with TPG HFC (50 plan) for years, no major hiccups to date.

Trialled their 5G modem for a couple of days recently, it was wildly inconsistent (anywhere between 1 and 150 Mbps). Sent 5G modem back.

Now they're telling me the cost of my plan is going up $5 per month, to $75.

    Any suggestions?

    • yeah. I recommend reading the other comments on here. I'm eyeing either aussieBB or Launtel based off of others experience.

      • I’ve looked up prices today. Aussie, Superloop, Launtel are all more expensive, even compared to TPG’s newly raised pricing. Not to mention I’d have to pay for a new modem+router.

Considering I haven’t had issues with the service to date, I’ve decided I have no reason to move away from TPG atm

Telstra: I had nothing but problems for years, constant calls to support (which never ended up helping) and endless frustration. They also left me on a grandfathered plan at 50/20 (we paid for the best as soon as it was available, which was 50/20) when they released 100/20 at the same price we were paying, without informing is there was a better plan available at the same price, or upgrading us to that plan, even though we were already paying the same price for a lower plan.

AussieBB: Pretty easy to setup, not nearly as many problems, but there have been a few, I was annoyed with how often there was "unscheduled service" but it only lasted a few hours and only occurred every few weeks or so, seems to have stopped now. There is also a weird issue, the internet disconnects for a few seconds / a minute or two at 3:09 AM every day, not a huge problem unless you are online gaming at the time, which I was.

  • Superloop 50/20 during peak always gets around 49ish dropped once or twice over 3 month periods can't complain

MyRepublic was so bad that I decided solid internet was worth more than churning signup bonuses. Cannot even begin on how bad the experience was with them and still sorting out issues several months after leaving. Moved back to Superloop and will probably stay here because they've been reliable the whole time I've been on them.

I was only with Origin for a short period of time but their customer service was utterly fantastic, even though I'd already scheduled a move to another provider. If they weren't so expensive at the time I would have gone back to them, their pricing actually looks alright these days for gigabit but still more than everyone else. Currently on a fixed energy plan but when that's up I might look at what it's like taking power/gas/internet over to them.

From my experience (only ones I have had experience with) If after best value, (promo/discounted price with great customer service greater focus on company's who bring more discount etc.) NBN - 1. Superloop, 2. Exetel, 3. Vodafone, 4. TPG, 5. Belong
Worst one Tangerine ( didn't get my service connected within 14 days, who family was left without internet because of this. At the end took belong over them and gotten connected pretty soon after their modem arrived (may be a 3-7 days).

    For 5G home internet
If after less than 6 months- 1. Go with Vodafone, If 1 year+ may consider TPG as 1 instead. 2, Optus, 3. Telstra.

AussieBB customer. More expensive but ultra reliable and always nominal speed + about 10%. I have fibre right into a shelf in the wardrobe. Had it for about 8 years. One unscheduled outage recently but well explained later. Several scheduled outages when they were installing new equipment. These latter outages are the sort of thing other ISPs do without telling you in advance. I'm paying a bit more but loving it. I have been looking at 4G or 5G connections to get a bit more speed but not available where I am on the Mornington Peninsula, VIC.

I spent years with TPG and found their service to be mediocre with drop outs fairly regularly, and using their own DNS rather than Google's would cause less stability. Speeds and costs were good, support was terrible.
Was with iPrimus for a year, support was EXCELLENT, but the area I was in was too far from an exchange to give decent speeds.

    Starting with ADSL 2+ (etc) and going to NBN;
Have been with Exetel for the last 7-8 years, and have no issues. The service is quite consistent, I rarely have any speed issues. Support has been okay, have had very few issues to warrant calling them. Costs aren't the cheapest, but not the most expensive. Can't complain.

  • Merged from Best NBN Provider?

    Hey all,
Looking to move away from Vodafone as we are getting charged a fair bit for the service which seems to have a lot of drop outs lately.

Currently looking at superloop as a replacement for their FTTC connection for 100/20 package. Has anyone had experience good or bad with superloop or can recommend another good provider?

    Cheers

    • +1

Superloop is good but support can be slow to get a hold of if you need it. Would recommend trying it. It’ll be better than Voda for sure.

Poll may be a good idea.
Aussie BB here, not cheap, but can't complain about the connection or the service whenever I've needed it. Often have new plan deals. If with them already, call them and mention a cheaper plan you are considering switching to and they'll give you a $10/month discount or something.

      • That works for Aussie BB?

    • Merged from Best nbn Provider?

      Hey all,
Currently researching the best providers to replace vodafone as its getting shoddy recently. Would be for FTTC connection for 100/20 package. Drop a vote in the poll
      Cheers

    • I’d risk saying that RSP does not matter. You buy NBN in the end. I have not interacted with my Superloop ever after switching.

      • +2

Sorry but you could not be more wrong.
NBN provide the "last mile" from your home to the ISPs Network, your RSP purchases an ALLOCATION within the highway.
Cheap ISP don't purchase sufficient bandwidth so peak times suffer.
Your ISP provides critical services like DNS, but ultimately your ISP also purchases INTERNET and this is really where experience differs.
I've had experience with many, currently on Aussie after moving from Telstra.
Aussie's Internet Carriage to the US and bandwidth within Australia is a lot better.
HOWEVER traffic to Asia takes a completely different path to Telstra and unfortunately higher ping times.
Overall I prefer the experience with Aussie, but both are a lot better than the others.
Your ISP also purchases high bandwidth allocations on Content Delivery Networks, meaning for many downloads, including streaming services experience differs greatly.
With FTTN your RSP needs to purchase capacity down to the local node, that's a lot to manage but not an issue for fttc
HFC is a basket case, you're really at the mercy of your Neighbours.

        • Wow, thanks! I will check this out.
