    The original was never under copyright. This translation is also in the public domain. However, modern translations are still copyright. I don't believe this version is an accurate translation as Butler chose to be poetic.

      There was never "accurate translation". No original & "the earliest surviving example of "Homeric" (not related to Homer) papyri is from the III century BC (by Hellenistic, not Hellenic writers in Alexandria, Macedonian capital).
      About 300 medieval manuscripts of the Iliad or Odyssey survive from the IX - XV century. Differences in the ancient versions copied by medieval scribes, combined with their own transcription errors & editorial decisions, make it very difficult to sort out relationships among the manuscript texts. In the West, where there was almost no knowledge of Greek, scholars & others had to rely on the Ilias Latina, Latin abridgment & other accounts with dubious authenticity.

  The Iliad is in the public domain, this translation is in the public domain (translator died 120 years ago). If the normal price is $0, how is $0 price on the front page of Ozbargain?

  It's surely in the Ozbargain spirit to point people to the many open source options like Project Gutenberg.
