Does Cab Rank Rule Apply to Customers?

Cab rank rule is basically where a taxi has to accept your fare no matter how short your ride is, but I'm wondering if this also applies to the customer?

Where there's a line of taxis waiting, at for example an airport, can I choose a taxi that is not the first in line? Reason is I have been ripped off in the past by drivers of a specific nationality and I would like to avoid them from now on. Please don't accuse me of racism, I have tried again and again to be open minded, but I find that every time I am ripped off in a taxi it is always by drivers of a specific nationality.

For those who would suggest I download Uber or similar - I feel like I don't catch taxis enough to warrant taking up extra space on my phone.

    • Maxi vans don't usually take 1 passenger from the airport? Most people usually see that it is meant for a group and sort it out.

Easy, ask the first driver if it's OK if you just need to go down the street. He'll be so happy you took the cab behind.

I would have thought that the nationality of most of the people driving taxis in Australia was Australian. Its not as if there such a shortage of the skills required to drive taxis that we have to bring in temporary workers, like we do with picking fruit.

It doesn't pay much so yeah, immigrants drive taxis

If you don't want the first cab, tell him if he takes you home, you will let him give you oral pleasure, when he refuses go to the next cab and say the same thing, when you reach the back of the line, ask the driver to take you home, then wind down the window and give a thumbs up while cheering to the other cab drivers.

  • Which nationality?

  • OP has a good point. Let's go with it (but don't call me racist either)

Based on my own experience I find people of a certain nationality don't work as hard as people from other nationalities. Maybe I will stop giving interviews to them for vacant jobs and only focus on giving opportunities to the other nationalities(that work harder) ;)

    See what I did there.

    • Yeah fighting racism with racism that will teach em! /s

Let’s not fool ourselves. Personal choices pertaining to associates, friends, spouses, politicians, brands, cereal, etc. are based on preferences and biases.
Corporate policies may differ to personal, but in the end interview success or failure choice is made by person(s).

if you negotiate the price and they taxi driver trys to pull a fast one on you. tell them to drive to the police station and sort it out on the spot. i did this and the driver ended up with nothing. i said i would pay what we agreed on to get me to where i wanted. so in the end he got jack and i was closer to home so got a cheap taxi ride at full price.

I really hate taxis… I catch a lot for work and lately I have been ripped off the in approx 1/3 of taxis rides.

Sometimes it’s a few extra dollars that miraculously get added right at the end (and there were no toll roads), sometimes the fare is double what it usually is with no explanation but since I take the same routes often I know it’s off, sometimes they just type a different amount into the eftpos machine vs the meter hoping I don’t notice… most recently the driver shamelessly added a tip to the fare and when I asked for a receipt he realised he was going to get caught out and made this big fuss saying the printer was broken (but I waited it out for him to fix the printer, refusing to get out of the cab until I had a receipt).

Usually I can’t be f-ed arguing because it’s only a few dollars and work is paying. This sort of thing used to be rare but the frequency of occurrence it’s getting out of control!

I too have had negative experiences with taxis, most common gripes being unclean vehicles and not using the most direct and efficient route. While I've had drivers of various backgrounds, the negative experiences were generally of the same background. Your experiences shape your future decisions and because of this it's understandable you want to minimise your risk, thus, I don't see it as racist.

In my case, I stopped taking taxi's (specifically, to and from the airport). I've provided feedback in the past but felt it was pointless.

Maybe where you’re going wrong is asking people what their nationality is when you’re jumping in their cab, unless of course you’re assuming it based on their appearance, in which case maybe this is where you’re going wrong,

  • +2

Just because youve asked not to be accused of racism doesn't mean it's not racism. This is about as cut and dry as it gets. I think I've figured out why you keep getting ripped off.

    • +2

OP openly admits to discriminating against others based on race and declares he is not racist.

OP justifies view due to past experiences, but fails to see that this is EXACTLY what racism is.

OP is a racist in denial.

Noticing a pattern isn't racist. In fact when such a pattern exists to the point of becoming obvious, often means THEY are the real racists.

  • What are you storing on your phone? Sounds like you own a very basic phone which tells me you are cheapskate and have probably not been ripped off.

  • Discriminate others based on their race, and simultaneously declare it's not racist by not announcing the actual race.

You should get your head checked mate. It's still racist, and I'm calling you out for it.

  • If reasonable I don't think you have to choose first cab off the rank

E.g if you need a people mover for lots of people vs a sedan or if the cab is not safe due to cleanliness or strong smell

Sometimes you can negotiate a fixed price at the start of the fare but that's at the discretion of the driver

    • They already allow for this. e.g. Not all taxi drivers carry kid car seats, not all can take wheelchairs (with the person still sitting in them/without them folding down and going in the boot), etc - so the first driver will often direct them to go to cabs behind them. But Mr & Mrs Average who have no special need do have to take the first one.

      • Good thing about Qld are taxi and uber don't need to use child seat

I feel like I don't catch taxis enough to warrant taking up extra space on my phone.

I suppose there's just that fine line between not catching enough taxis to "warrant taking up extra space on your phone" and needing to cause a big discriminatory stink by explicitly stating that "everyone from a country is [insert something here]" (the very definition of discrimination).

Good on you for informing that you're not a racist, otherwise I would have thought you were one.

There's a reason stereotypes exist… because most people fit into one.

Some cultures are just better than others. e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKJoMO0vJ5c

Right, these two scammers represent the sum total of the billion odd people living there. And just about every taxi driver of Indian origin is therefore a scammer.

And there are no scams down here in our fine land, or elsewhere in the world.

What an wonderful world view to have.

What exactly does your video prove?

Karl married an Indian woman, just so you know mate.

"Some cultures are just better than others". There's always bad apples in every culture.

For instance, your bad-faith shitposting in this thread (coupled with your mask-sheep avataar) aptly demonstrates the above.

You'll be waiting a long time then if you wanna pick and choose your driver's race

  • If OP rephrased to say “sometimes I get a bad feeling/vibe from a driver that they are going to rip me off, so I would prefer a different driver” would that be less racist?

Personally, I have been ripped off by taxi drivers who appear to come from differing backgrounds/ county of origin. I couldn’t single one out and I guess it’s irrelevant…Ultimately, the taxi industry isn’t doing themselves any favours ripping off customers.

I'm guessing it's the Melbourne taxi drivers that are a problem: https://youtu.be/aka0c4f5We4?t=72

  • How have you been ripped off?
    Any examples you can share?

  • -2

Unscrupulous taxi drivers get away by playing the race card victim

    They should be deported asap

I ve got the same issue at sydney airport. The cab driver took the lomgest waya nd even slow down just to ripped me off. I was pretty annoyed and super tired. Lodge a complaint and since then i just used uber which i know what i m paying for and that they won't just take the longest way just to get money… sadly this is how people stop trusting Sydney cab company.

  • Back in the days when i took the taxis for work, the cabbies themselves enforced the 'take the first cab in line' rule, which really pissed me off as i once had to take a friggin maxi taxi on my own. If i was paying for it myself, i rather take the train home and drive myself than to pay like $70 for a fare lol

  • +1

Uber might not be the best but it definitely solves this problem. Back in the day when uber didnt exist, I used to have this problem all the time because i used to live in mascot. Taxis were super annoying, i rather pay the airport train fee.

  • It will cause fights amongst the drivers, not worth the hassle.
Join this century with a modern phone which can fit an app and let the broken taxi industry go extinct.

people are funny. Let see that thing this way, for example look at dogs. Poodle are cute, Chihuahuas are annoying and aggressive, pitbull dogs are strong and lethal, should let your kid away from them, etc…etc… People just aware and judge other people base on appearances and where they come from. Some people came or was born from some places tend to have same behaviours, aka their culture. You must be stupid if you spot the same scenarios happen to you many times but you don't learn or aware from that. There is nothing wrong with that, as long as you don't abuse, verbally insult them.

To make this clear, I came from oversea, and I also aware my people came from some particular zones in my country to, due to their culture and behaviours. and yes, I also got discriminated and unfair too, and have no sign it will stop any soon in this country or anywhere. But hey, that's life. Please look both ways.

  • So, which culture and ethnic group are we talking about?

    • Odds are it's one with decent ethnic cuisine.

  • What a world we live in

  • Cairns Airport: Boeing 787 arriving, 300 people disembarking: Zero taxis available! Dual terminal airport, single rideshare zone out of sight.
15 mins later a rusty old taxi van parks illegally outside the rank. Next taxi does the same. Welcome to corrupt Queensland…

Tell em to take you to a cop shop usually straightens em out…

i had a new australian pick me up at Mascot airport to take me to Kurnell one Friday night after a work trip to Brisbane..

Told him when I got in the car that it was my first time in Sydney… which it wasnt, lived there 35yrs at that stage.

So as we went over the harbour bridge I asked if he knew where he was going… and to take me to the Nth Sydney police station.

Reported him…. never heard anything about it sadly

    • He probably got his bridges mixed up, he was obviously looking for the La Perouse to Kurnell bridge.

I agree with op on the storage issue. I recently went through a round of cleaning up apps I do not use often or at all. The amount of space some apps use is ludicrous. Most of that space is filled up with garbage used to collect data on you and unoptimised junk code / assets.
