A limited-time distribution of Gengar was announced for Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield during the September 2nd broadcast of Pokémon Journeys: The Series (Pocket Monsters) in Japan. This Gengar is based on the Gengar used by Ash Ketchum in the World Coronation Series. Players can redeem this Gengar using the code「GENNGER0GE94」. This code can only be redeemed until September 15th.

How to receive the Gengar via Mystery Gift:
* Launch Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield from the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu.
* Press the X button during gameplay to access the in-game menu.
* Select MYSTERY GIFT.
* Select Get a Mystery Gift.
* Select Get with Code/Password.
* Enter code 「GENNGER0GE94」 and select OK.
* Select サトシ's Gengar Gift.
* Be sure to save your game after receiving your gift.

This distribution is the third of a series of distributions of Ash's Pokémon. The next Pokémon, Sirfetch'd, will be distributed starting September 9th.

    To be fair, it's meant to be thematic to his in-show Gengar, rather than a competitive ready Pokémon like some of the distributions of Pokemon used by real world champion players. It's not like the game mechanics have ever applied in the anime 100%.

  I just want my Gengar back, that I traded an old friend to help them to defeat the Elite 4. (profanity) tried to clone it and deleted it in the process.

  Noob question here. Are these Pokemon you get via codes only for the pokedex? Like can you use them in battle? Where are they kept I cant seem to find them?

    Can use in battle. Should be sent to your PC if your party is full.

  I can't access the MYSTERY GIFT option after pressing X? Could it be I am just at the start of the game, haven't even battled the first gym yet.

    The Mystery Gift feature becomes available when you speak to your characrer's mother after battling the mysterious Pokémon in Slumbering Weald. It shouldn't take too long to unlock, so if you're not at that point yet, just keep following the storyline a bit further and you'll get there quickly enough.

        If you've already got the first gym badge, you're long past the point where you should already have it unlocked. If you can't see it when pressing X, go back and talk to your character's mother in Postwick.
