I plan to travel to Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. Would I still able to receive onetime codes from banks and paypal while I am there?
Or do I need to purchase some addon packs?
I just need to receive SMS, not planning to call or send texts at all.

Suggest doing your banking before you depart as much as possible. I also found having a non-roaming SIM a PITA on European trip recently. Text confirmation is great until you can’t receive texts
I have been using the Kogan mobile prepaid while in Europe and Asia this year and there is no cost to receive text messages. As long as there is a signal and your roaming is switched on you will be all good to receive your onetime codes.
If you want to use your internet or reply to a text you need to purchase a prepaid roaming add on.
Same for US, with Kogan and was getting SMSs. But, I noticed there might be a delay and this can screw up your logins. As other suggested, do all your banking before you go if you can.
Receiving messages on roaming is free for amaysim. Probably kogan roaming too
