What Does Lifetime Warranty Exactly Mean?

I have a backpack from Crumpler that has a lifetime warranty. Provided that the criteria is met and gets replaced, does the new replacement still get a lifetime warranty? It's a grey area from my understanding.

What about lifetime warranty just in general?

  • I had a Targus backpack with a lifetime warranty, thought it was a great backpack with a great warranty…. until it started to have manufacturing issues.

    The part of the zip that does that hard work broke - replaced the entire backpack.
    The stitching inside a pocket failed - replaced the entire backpack.
    A buckle broke - replaced the entire backpack.
    This all happen within the first year.
    I was then informed they would not be replacing any more faults because in their words 'I got my money's worth out of the warranty'.
    I told them if it broke again I'd want a refund because I'd been patient enough with them.

    So far it hasn't failed again, but that was the Targus definition of Lifetime.

        To me the issue was them defining 'lifetime' to mean 3 replacements - even though the backpack was faulty each time and it was still the first year.
        Don't say lifetime if you only mean 3 replacements.

    • I mean….that's great value tbh. Had the same thing with a usb c cable. I think i got about 5 or 6 replacements.

      • I agree, and each time it was a painless experience, but I didn't like them saying I'd 'used up' my warranty because of manufacturing issues.

          Yeah i agree. Maybe their gusrantee has a little asterisk that explains more in the tnc hahaha. Much like "unlimited data".

          But all those issues in a year? That's poor quality tbh.

          Maybe they defined lifetime as in, the lifetime of a bag is…1year hahaha.

          • @PeeDee: I never heard back from them, and to be honest after those issues the bag kept on keeping on for years.
            If it had failed again I was prepared to fight them for warranty cover though.

  • My crumpler backpack had it's stitching fail on the straps and they asked me to post it back at my expense for re-stitching.

      Did they mention accepting exchange from retail?

      What did you hope to get?

      • This bag is about 6 years old now, was about 2 years old at the time. I doubt paypal would help…

        I wouldn't mind an equivalent replacement

  • it depends, if the product is bad and you think you're fine because "oh it has a lifetime warranty" you have to remember that if the original is bad, odds are that the replacement will be.

    other manufacturers offer exceptional warranties because they know their product is good and will not fail outside of exceptional circumstances.

    my understanding is that most manufacturers who offer a "lifetime" warranty, only offer it for the "lifetime" of the product itself. if they replace the product, the replacement is not covered by the warranty.

    i like what filson do, although they are on their way out, as they've already moved most manufacturing overseas, lowing costs for them, but keeping the prices high for their customers, even though the high prices are no longer warranted as the products are not made in America any more, but back to my point about their warranty;

    they repair the product, such as a jacket (if possible), rather than replacing it, and there have been people who send their jackets in many times due to their abuse of the product, which is hard to do as it's a durable jacket (the tin cloth specifically).

  • From Belkin case - the manufacturer has to state in the product packaging what lifetime means. If not mentioned in there - it means the lifetime of the original purchaser.

    • I was going to say - until it kills you or until you die.

    • I'd prob take a snapshot of the policy at the time of purchase in case they add other conditions

  • I have a Crumpler bag where the velcro had detached after about 15 years of heavy use. I took it back to a Crumpler shop, they fixed it for free and then shipped it back to me - I can't remember if I paid for that shipping though. They didn't ask for the receipt, which is fortunate as I didn't have it.
    TBH the quality of the repairs wasn't very good. They did replace the velcro so that's great, but they had to re-stitch a large part of the front and they didn't sew particularly straight/neat and there are some gaps in their work. I am not sure I'd go back for another repair or remediation TBH.

      by the time RAM fails, there will be a new standard and you will never bother paying postage to exchange it.

      • I had some PC-150 SDRAM that came with lifetime warranty. Technology moves quickly, good luck getting parts replaced once they slow or stop manufacturing..

  • Usually after warranty repair/replacement you're left with the remainder of the original warranty period. In this case as the original warranty period is lifetime, you have the remainder of lifetime left. What defines lifetime will be in the warranty fine print.

  • When i was in the bike industry "lifetime" was the lifetime of the frame or as long as the original purchaser owned the frame. so technically you could have it fail 50 years down the line and you'd get a new frame.
