Xiaomi AX1800 Wall Penetration Issues

Hi all,

I moved into a new place and dont have wired access anymore to my router. How can I improve my signal strength? It keeps dropping intermittently.

1) Have an existing TP Link Archer VR600 router. Can I use that as a repeater?
2) Get another AX1800 and mesh it?
3) Upgrade to better router - current router is Xiaomi AX1800? Xiaomi AX3600 / AX6000 / AX9000 which seem to have more antennas and according to their advert they have better wall penetration.

Can someone with experience on this help me with a decision.

Thanks :)

  • How big is the area that you need WiFi coverage? I would suggest a wifi mesh system based on your needs.

    • drew a quick one in mspaint

      • Are the walls made of stone or something? You shouldn't be having any trouble if router is in another room down the hall 5m away. I'd try changing the wifi channel you're on before buying a new router. Or try the 2.4Ghz wifi and compare to the 5Ghz.

        • Yep I think so (atleast from outside, i see stone bricks). its an old house from 89, recently renovated.

I'd try changing the wifi channel you're on before buying a new router

thank you will try that switching channels.

          • @kehuehue: That'll be the problem then. Does the laundry door ever need to be shut? Or is there a gap above the door wide enough for an ethernet and power cable? You could mount the router above the laundry door in the hallway, that'll help a bit. Or can you put a console in the hallway between the laundry and bathroom, and put the router on that and run the cables discreetly along the skirting board. And how is the wifi in the rest of the house, you might really need a new router or mesh system if all the walls are stone and the house is large.

            • @AustriaBargain: Yep, router is behind closed linen cabinet (wooden door). Then atleast 3 walls in between. Will try to place outside in the hall :)

              • @kehuehue: WIFI drops off very quickly per solid wall, but if you can move it to the hallway then it may have a chance. Try putting it in the hallway for a test and see how you go.If it works you could try mounting it to the wall or putting a small hallway table or bookshelf to put it on.

Another option is to try a power line adapter and use the TP Link Archer VR600 in the desk in the room so you have WIFI in that room.

Another option is to use powerline adapter.
