Citibank Credit Card Bonus Points Terms Changed?

I used to churn Citibank credit cards every 18 months as the terms for bonus points used to be something like 'ineligible for bonus points if you hold or have held an open XXX card in the last 18 months'.

Now from the first sentence of their terms it sounds like if you've ever held the card you're ineligible for the points, whether it's velocity or flybuys. Has anyone had this issue?

"1. Customers who have previously received or are entitled to receive the 40,000 Flybuys Points will not be eligible to receive another 40,000 Flybuys Points. To be eligible to receive 40,000 Flybuys bonus points, you must apply for the Citi Rewards Card by 31 January 2023, then spend a minimum of $3,000 on eligible purchases using your new card within 90 days from approval. Eligible purchases exclude Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, interest, fees, refunds, Chargebacks and spend on a Linked Diners Club Card. We will request your Flybuys membership number from you via email within 8 weeks of meeting the spend criteria. The Flybuys points will be credited to your Flybuys account within 6 weeks from the date we receive your Flybuys membership number. Your Citi Rewards Card must remain open and in good standing to receive the Flybuys points. If you do not provide us with your Flybuys membership number within 8 weeks from us first requesting it, we reserve the right to credit the equivalent amount of Citi reward Points to your Citi Rewards Card. Flybuys points are administered by Loyalty Pacific Pty Ltd and subject to the Flybuys Terms and Conditions which are available at flybuys.com.au. Please note that if you have a balance transfer you will not be entitled to any interest free days on retail purchases. This means that all spend will be charged interest at the applicable annual percentage rate. This offer is valid until 31 January 2023. Post this advertised date; we reserve the right to continue, withdraw or change the offer at any time without notice. Loyalty Pacific Pty Ltd (ABN 82 057 931 334) (trading as Flybuys) receives payment from us for the Flybuys points that its members earn in connection with this offer."

  • Maybe it’s just Flybuys? 🤷🏽‍♂️

I just did a live chat with Citibank, asking about sign-up eligibility.

    They said

If the previous account has been closed for more than 3 months, you're welcome to apply for another Credit Card subject to review and approval.
If approved and the spend criteria are met, you'll be eligible for the promotion of the card you applied for (either may it be the cashback or bonus points)

    • This was one of the things churners struggled to get out of Citi, given they never printed cool off periods.

At least you got it in writing.

        Hopefully it helps some people!

Citibank (consumer products) were taken over by NAB. There have been subtle changes.

  • depends if there was a specific promotion maybe?

Kogan do it, if you got the black card got the free credit, you could never apply again under that promotion.

fwiw, I applied the first time the black kogan card was offered and gave a $500(?) credit. then after 12months+ I saw a promotion again but only $400 credit this time, did it again and got the credit.

    • Interesting, you're not supposed to get the bonus twice. Maybe the Citi system doesn't have the smarts to pick it up after 12 months
