130
GETINTOTHEVERSE

Jump in and try Star Citizen for free with this 7 Day free-fly event.

This is your chance to try out 8 of the best ships in the game as voted for by the players in the Ship Showdown event for absolutely no cost at all.

No purchase is necessary for this free fly event but there will be discounts on game packages. Star Citizen is a work in progress and is STILL in the Alpha stage of development (don't get me started) but there is definitely fun to be had. No ongoing monthly subscriptions required either.

If you do decide to buy a starter pack before the end of the event and have signed up using this referral link both referrer and referee will also receive a shiny new HoverQuad with lifetime insurance. ($30USD value).

Once you've signed up using the OzBargain link, head to: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/promotions/Ship-Showdown-… , scroll down and enter the code "GETINTOTHEVERSE" to activate the free-fly ships on your new account, download the game, and get exploring!

Have fun out there, fly safe, and we’ll see you in the ‘verse.

This game development is a total joke.

I have been a huge fan of the Privateer and Wing Commander series in the 90s so when this announced and development started in 2014 I was excited and even got sucked into buying few game packages and ships (sold later) … its ridiculous they have been at it for 8 years and there is still no final release and all they do is keep releasing ships and suck more money from ppl. Crazy.

I wouldn't exactly call it a disappointment but it's definitely a perfect example of how bad feature creep can be.

It's all about having the right expectations for the game and realising it's still in development. I've been a backer since 2016 and sure, there have been entire patch cycles where I haven't played because they were either entirely broken, or just broke the gameplay cycle I enjoy (mining/trading) over other loops (bounty hunting/pvp).

Other times though it's honestly been a fantastic experience (with a few bugs and crashes here and there because again, it's in development).

All I'd paid for the longest time was just the base $45 game package but this is why the free-fly is great because you can keep trying the game out again without paying anything until it hits the spot for an individual without spending a cent.

Only suckers will keep throwing money at virtual spaceships without really thinking about it and then call things a scam. I've bougt additional ships and have spend a few hundred additionally over the years but I honestly feel I've gotten more than my moneys worth of entertainment value from it so, no regerts.

    • I think the big issue is that even once complete, i don't really have a desire to enter something where every other player has been paying thousands of dollars for ships in the alpha.

Anyway, star Citizen is basically the poster boy for "why publishers and having a deadline are sometimes good things".

Why is a 7 day trial normally $45?

    • +1

The game costs from $45 but you can fly for free without paying anything for the next seven days. They run the promotional free-fly events probably around 3 times a year, often with a bonus ship or armour or something if people actually buy the game, but it's a great way to see how things are going and get a taste for it without spending anything.

Remember a time when demos were free rather than $45 of free value? Pepperidge farm remembers.

        • It is free. This is a free demo for 7 days. The $45 is to buy the game.

Tried it last time. FPS dipped to neanderthal cave painting era as I caught the subway to the spaceport. When the subway arrived, the assets for the spaceport hadn't loaded and so when I stepped out, I fell into the void and my spacesuit started using oxygen because it detected that I was in "space".
My computer's not that bad either. I'm currently playing Death Stranding on the highest settings and similarly finished Spider-man before that.
I love space games but until this one is optimised I guess I'll just limit myself to Youtube videos.

    • Based on your review, I'm going to give it a try. I hope I have a similar unique gaming experience that I will talk about in years to come.

My experience last free play week was good, despite what everyone says. A little sandbox-y and lacking in content but was enjoyable. Steep learning curve, had to watch 30 mins of youtube vids to get going. Would buy if it were sub-$20.

  • It's something I'd be interested to try, but in those seven days I'll probably have enough spare time to install the game and maybe get it running ok, so can't be bothered.

If they gave you a 12 hours of game time trial or something I'd be in. Or even better go the DCS/Drug dealer model and give everyone a ship for free and build the player base to want to buy in big.
