Router for 2 Storey Townhouse

I’m moving to a rented two storey townhouse in a month. I noticed the NBN modem is within the kitchen. There’s no ethernet port upstart or in any other room. If I am to work from upstairs what would be the best way to go about setting up the connectivity?

I searched in this forum but most threads are old and hence starting this thread.

I did see recommendations for google nest wifi, Ubi and Netgear. I’m not sure which would provide best connectivity. I cannot run ethernet cable to upstairs as it would go through living room and the stairs.

Your ideas are appreciated.

  • google nest wifi, Ubi and Netgear.

either of those is fine.. unless you know what you're doing, i would avoid Ubiquiti though. If you search for "mesh" on here, you will find heaps of threads about it

    • They seem to be connecting network cable to the additional points. Do they still have good speed without connecting network cable to points?

It's all down to the placement of your router and points, if you put router downstairs and there are many obstructions between it and the satellite point you'll get crappy speeds. The best place to deploy additional point would be somewhere like the stairwell.

You can use apps like Ubiquiti's WiFiman to measure signal strength and map out a wifi coverage heatmap to see where dead spots are.

powerline kit - runs ethernet through the existing power points

I wouldn't stress to much about it now. Just wait until you move in and see what works best. We've got a two story place and a single router and the reach upstairs is fine.

  • Depends on what sort of work you do. Mesh systems will give you good coverage but will introduce high latency. Ie not good for gaming/video calls etc.

    • Not gaming. But video, audio calls, screen sharing, remote system access, etc.,
