How does this compare to the popular Denon DHT-216 in terms of sound quality? Does the wireless sub make a huge difference? Beginning to hate watching movies on the tv for the sound alone

How does this compare to the popular Denon DHT-216 in terms of sound quality?

Don’t know about the Denon, but this Yamaha IMHO is the best soundbar you can get at this price , especially if you want very clean deep bass. One of the most highly rated and reviewed budget soundbars in the market. Google and you’ll see what I mean. Had one for a couple of years still love it.

Does the wireless sub make a huge difference?

Yes a huge difference, especially for movies.

      • Considering getting this to replace my old Yamaha soundbar and possibly get rid of my google home max in the same room as well. Want to have one speaker for both tv and music. Do you find the sound with streaming music good on yours? I think Alexa will support Apple Music (hopefully)

    Hmmm, I'll bite! 😉
Also, ShopBack for 3.5% on Home Entertaiment (Includes TVs, Projectors, Sound Bars, Home Theatre Systems, Amplifiers).

Does the sub need to be placed vertically?

Can i use the sound bar without the sub?

Is the sound bar alone worth it without the sub? With the intention of only plugging in the sub for movies?

Reason why I'm asking is because i have a 1 year old that'll destroy the sub if it's in reaching distance but i have been wanting a sound bar.

    • +3

You don't have to use the subwoofer, but it sounds so much better with it.
If you don't want subwoofer get YAS-109 with built in subwoofers.
But YAS-209 sounds so much better :) you want wireless sub.

Never know, you will be surprised sometimes.

My 15 MO destroys everything but she never touch my subs, and its just on the floor next to the tv cabinet

      • My +$1k JBL Sub stopped working at some point. Opened it up to take a look and lo and behold a teaspoon had made it's way thru the bass port and shorted out the internal circuit board.

Still have not replaced it with a decent sub.

"Can i use the sound bar without the sub?"

Pretty sure you wouldn't want to. They come together tuned as a package if you unplug the sub you basically get NO bass.

If you don't want the sub get the cheaper Yamaha soundbar that has the sub built in.
      It's currently $199 here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/724309

    • Can i use the sound bar without the sub?

Yes you can, but as others have said you wouldn't want to.

  • Does this have HDMI in?

    • Yes but doesn't support 4k 120hz

  • Worth saving more for the Samsung setups?

  • Is this an improvement of Z623s running in a small bedroom for a TV considering this is triple the price?

  • sub quite tall?

Thanks, just bought a TV with pretty bad sound, hopefully this will make it a little nicer.

  • This is the cheapest decent smart sound bar if you need the smarts for spotify or whatever.

I wouldn't buy a 2.x soundbar, like this one, regardless of make. 3.x soundbars are definitely worth the premium due to dedicated channels separating voice and sound effects making it much easier to hear dialogue

    • +1

Depends on the implementation and quality. I bought a second hand Samsung 7.1.2 soundbar and I don't think it's that much better than my years old YAS-106 in terms of voice clarity. A seperate sub is worth it but Atmos is gimmicky and the effect is not really there.

This is a really good sounding setup. Bought one for my folks and am always impressed whenever I hear it. For general TV/Movies/Music it's fantastic.

  • Thank you a lot OP, snapped one.

I'm sorry, not a chance they'll accept it back in that state.

Amazon return is fantastic, you never know.

        P.S. get +1 from me

  • Does anyone here recommend this for use with a PC?

    • +2

I wouldn't. Keep an eye out for the Edifier deals that pop up here from time to time though.

  • Purchased this on Prime day for $318 with a $25 cashback. Highly recommend at this price point. Alexa integration also works very well (if you're into that)

    • With Alexa, can you group it to play simultaneously with other devices? (e.g. Dot, Studio, etc.)

Anyone know if you can wall mount this like you can with the YAS109?

    • Wall mounting points (hook on type) on the back in this pic.

      • Super helpful, thanks Snoop. I tried, but failed to find an image showing this!

    • +1

If I'm not mistaken… This is effectively the YAS109 with a bass speaker?

      • +4

No, the number of internal speakers, speaker sizes, and power are all different. See here for details.

        YAS-109 YAS-209
        Center unit:Front L/R: 5.5 cm (2-1/8“) cone × 2, Tweeter: 2.5 cm (1”) dome × 2, Built-in subwoofer: 7.5 cm (3") cone × 2 Center unit: Front L/R: 4.6 cm (1-3/4”) cone × 4, Tweeter: 2.5 cm (1") dome × 2, Subwoofer: 16 cm (6-1/2”) cone
        Output power: 120 W (Front L/R: 30 W × 2-ch, Built-in subwoofer: 60 W) 200 W (Center unit: 50 W × 2-ch, Subwoofer: 100 W)
        Dimensions: 890 x 53 x 131 mm (35” x 2-1/8” x 5-1/8”) 930 × 62 × 109 mm (36-5/8" × 2-1/2" × 4-1/4")

        • I was mistaken. Good digging, sir.

          • @Jayblesz: Important note on this YAS-209 spec "Subwoofer: 16 cm (6-1/2”) cone".
This is referring to the separate sub unit. So there are no subwoofers at all in the actual soundbar.

As another comment asked, "can I use this without the sub?" the answer is yes you probably can but you will get zero bass.

  • Thanks - I bought one

  • I bought this about 8 months ago for $350 and it sounds great… For the price. Could be more bassy with music etc but maximum bass setting still sounds good, and it gets bloody LOUD.
I would certainly recommend at this price. It's wayyyyyyy better than tv speakers that's for sure

  • How does this compare to Yas 109B, should make for a good gift 🎁

    • This has a proper sub 109 doesn't, nuff said.

  • Would this be good for a home office? Currently looking for a wireless speaker setup that works between my Macbook and PC.

    • It's a longboy to have as an office speaker… Almost a metre long.
I don't see why it wouldn't work though, if that's suitable. It has wired and wireless connectivity.

  • Just wondering how does this (YAS-209), compare to the Philips TAPB603?

The Yamaha has the slightly better name, and the Philips appears to have bigger sound (320w).
Apart from that seems the difference is marginal, or am I mistaken???

  • You snagged one at chadstone for $99 and didn't pay the delivery fee?
