Suggestions for Virtual/One-Time Debit Cards to Use on Free Trials?

Hi folks,

I'm looking at a particular training course on Udemy, this course is included in their "Udemy personal subscription plan" that has a 7 day free trial, but they want my bank card to start the trial, and knowing my luck, I'll forget to cancel and get slugged the $30 for the following month.

I could be a responsible adult and set myself reminders etc, but I'd like to limit the potential damage if I forget to cancel too…

I've heard of privacy.com that sets up a virtual debit card, but their TOS suggests it's for US citizens only. I could go to Woolies and buy a Visa gift card, but I wasn't sure if there were any other options people had used for this purpose?

Thanks!

I use this all the time for trials. I believe there is an initial credit check when signing up though.

    REVOLUT
i have this, been using it, great. you can generate new cc number, then use it, then kill it.
    anytime, free, instant

make sure use referral system. currently the promo is for the referrer to receive $100, but new user $0.
you can negotiate with the referrer to split the reward, some will agree some will not.
i think its fair to split the reward tho otherwise whats the benefit for you, right?

    • Clearly chimot is offering a 50/50 split, but some are willing to go higher :)

    • Curious how the referral splitting works.

only the person who refers gets the $100. don't sign up now because you have to do the requirements in less than 24 hours. you will have to wait a few days.

Definitely do not trust all users here.

asked someone to split their tiger brokers referral MF didn't share anything at all, even tho I only asked him 40%

That sucks. Were they a long time member? Chimot has been around since 2008, so probably trustworthy.

Active almost every now and then

Anyway I gave up, should have just not used that idiots referral link
I personally don't mind people getting referrals, but when someone says they would share and then later do not share anything not even like 10-20% that's what really annoys me.

I cannot comment on other people's trustworthiness, Hopefully the person you are using referral of is honest.

          • @USER DC: Yeah that's a real jerk move on their part. Such a long time member too. Hard to trust people nowadays. Should name and shame, if you feel comfortable doing that.

        • Well i have been to many ozb meetup so i wont run away for a mere $50.
          If $5mil yeah

    • You're assuming that Revolut will pay the referral in the first place. Also some users have reported payments going through even though they cancelled the card.

  • AusPost Mastercard?

  • i've used the coles 10% off gift/mastercards for both kayo and spotify, use one with low balance remaining
    .

    • I use the one with no balance remining

      • tried that once (maybe kayo) didn't work
        .

    • It's very hit-and-miss with using the gift mastercards for this purpose.

A lot of merchants, and particularly online services (streaming, courses etc), will just decline the gift cards.

Wise also offers virtual cards that you can use for timed trials

  • Forget cancelling within 7 days… Make me wonder if the course info will also be forgotten within the 7 days.

    • The other option is just buying this particular course outright for ~$55 (when not on sale) and forgetting about the subscription, but I thought I'd see if the first option was viable. My main bank is CBA and they don't appear to have any one-time cards like others do.

  • Sportsbet.com.au offer a Mastercard Cash Card

    • Don't think this card offers one-time use, does it?

      • Only if you use it once.

But for a one-off trial it should suffice for Udemy at least.

I dunno, is the OP after multiple trials.

        • I think anything you deposit into Sportsbet will need to be bet at least once before you can withdraw. They have turnover (anti money laundering) requirements.

          • @RotundPolarBear: I think that is only on winnings.
            Anyway, no fees.

            Otherwise Wise.

            • @holdenmg: Winnings don't need to be turned over actually, only deposits. I have a few grand in Sportsbet and actively bet (match betting), so am somewhat familiar with them.

UP Bank has a virtual card (in additional to the main card) that you can lock and unblock on demand. Could be an option. Unblock it to use the card, then immediately re-block the card to prevent future charges.

    • Revolut can be block temporarily too

  • Any Australian-based service that is free, doesn't need a credit check, and can just have a $0.10 credit? Thanks.
