Expired Warranty on New Apple AirPods Max from Officeworks

Hi, I bought AirPods Max from Officeworks.

They should be Australian stock from Apple right?

I bought them less than a month ago and it buzzed and suddenly sound was lower in volume and bass thump was gone. That happened for one whole night. Later I guess it was ok. I took to Apple store to get it checked, but when they checked warranty date. It was expired, over a year ago. So they told me to take it back to Officeworks.

Officeworks replaced another pair for me but the second pair says it’s also expired in warranty. I can’t buy two year Apple Care for them and Apple won’t give me manufacturing warranty for first year.

Have anyone experienced out of warranty Apple AirPods Max after they just purchased them new? And possibly from Officeworks?

I know a few OzBargainer from posts, some have bought from Officeworks from price match, what’s your experience?

Thanks for your input in advance.

Quite odd OP as OW is an authorised dealer of apple products. The only thing I can think of is the headphones have been opened and paired to an apple device.

When this happens apple servers are notified of the date of activation. So I can only conclude that they were opened at some point.

    • Good to be told OW are authorised dealer.
I have bought serval other apple products from office works before, but this is a first that’s happened. Both AirPods max came in a delivery office work box, shipping box inside, Sealed product box (clear wrap) inside that. They seem like genuine headphones as far as I can tell. I also picked the box directly from officeworks store.

Yeah that's very strange. I used to work at JB HiFi and we sometimes had issues with 'just received stock' not being able to be added to AppleCare. We had to wait for apples internal system to update the items. Could be something similar.

        • Oh, thanks, that could be the case. I might ask officeworks to do an investigation about it. They couldn’t even find my last serial one first AirPods max to confirm they are same ones I got last month. I think they suspected I got a different pair.

  • I had bought WD hard drive at bargain price from JB hifi (the 6 TB my cloud storage one)

jb hifi was selling it, they said it would still be under warranty. (they cannot evade ACL)

After 6 months or so WD discontinued support of OS3 drives (including this one) hence I could no longer get its intended use as a cloud storage device. I had to complain numerous times to WD, almost be an As*hole, cause they did agree my product was in warranty but refused to do much about it.

I had to prove to WD that item was under warranty by providing them recipt etc. but their CS was horrible, they kept asking for like STORE AUTHORISATION STAMP, and like how the heck one get's a stamp from JB hifi as a customer dude ??

Ultimately they did end up shipping me another hard disk which I could use on their newer OS5, (hence still use it for cloud storage). But their email told me they'd send me My cloud ex2ultra instead, and they actually shipped me the same one I had.

So again I had to ship to WD this drive, but yeah eventually did end up getting My cloud EX2 ULTRA 8 TB (2x 4 TB) HDD.

I didn't bother anything with JB Hifi, but I would have had bothered with them if WD didn't accept my proposal.

We can't bust heads like we used to. But we have our ways. One trick is to tell stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for m'shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. 'Gimme five bees for a quarter,' you'd say. Now where were we…oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones…

      • Wow, that really sounds like the way Bart, from Simpsons, grandpa would tell his stories. Lol

      • What about Red Onions?

  • What has WD HDD got to do with op problem?

  • Very very strange, especially on Apple’s products. I personally would get a refund.

    Please keep us posted.

    • Hmmm, a refund, I thought about it too…well I price matched them for just below $700. (I know it’s not the cheapest price, lol, but were at the time) They are new ones, and thinking they are from officeworks, should be genuine. I really don’t want to pay $800-$900 or pay lower for a possible fake or low quality one or one I would have second thoughts of.
I will keep you posted, thanks for the input.

Apple are still obligated to repair or replace the AirPods as the headphones are clearly covered by the statutory warranty after a year. Apple was wrong to send you to OfficeWorks. Apple has already been fined by the ACCC for having a policy in breach of these rules.

    • Wrong. The obligations you speak of are only correct if Apple was also the retailer of the product, which in this case they were not - it was OfficeWorks.

      https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees…

"You can approach the manufacturer or importer directly, however, you will only be entitled to recover costs from them, which include an amount for reduction in the product’s value and in some cases compensation for damages or loss. You cannot demand a repair, replacement or refund from the manufacturer."

Key sentence being the last one in particular.

    • Apple is not the retailer in this case though, so it's nothing to do with them.

Sounds like someone from officeworks found a shipping container 'by the side of the road' full of airmaxpodpros, and maybe apple knew the serial numbers and voided warranty?

  • Sounds dodgy as.

Ok, I called apple store, they put me onto Agreement Admin apple people.
I had to send them a receipt and they updated the system for new warranty.
They said there is nothing out of the ordinary and these things happen.
Officeworks are genuine sellers and the system sometimes doesn’t log in purchase date. All resolved. I can now buy apple care for them.
They said it was strange apple store (gave me a letter) and told me to go back to officeworks to resolve it.
Apple store does fix things within manufacture warranty not bought from apple store. All good now :)
