iPhone Trade-in and Salary Sacrifice

I am looking to upgrade my iPhone 13 Pro Max 256 GB (purchased under salary sacrifice and using discounted Apple gift cards) to iPhone 14 Pro Max 256 GB using Trade-in on Apple Website/Store and I have couple of questions needing answers. Hoping to get some answers from those OzBargainers who do this regularly to take benefit of salary sacrifice.

  1. Apple website shows I can get $1020 for my phone and the new phone is $2099. If I choose to Trade-In on Apple website, I will have to pay full price and then receive the credit for Trade-in. How does it work in-store? Will I get option to pay only the difference of amount which is $1079 and do instant trade-in?

  2. If I want to use this purchase towards salary sacrifice, will I get benefit for the whole $2099 or only for the $1079 I paid out of pocket? I am not sure how this purchase looks on invoice otherwise I know we can claim the value shown on the invoice whether we pay by card, cash, Apple credit, Gift cards, or mix of this combo. Just unsure about the Trade-In.

You will receive the value of the trade-in as Apple GCs after Brightstar receives your device, and verify the valuation based upon the answers you would have provided when you initiated the trade in.

If you buy online and return your trade in by mail the refund the trade in value to your method of payment. Not apple gift cards.

      • You are correct, only If you pay for the entire order using a card.
If you use GCs or your account balance for payment (partial or in full), they issue the refund using GCs.

Maybe sell your phone privately for $1020 for cash, just to simplify things.

I'd wait for the 15 Pro.

    • With salary sacrifice and discounted Apple gift cards, I figured it’s best to trade-in and upgrade for better value especially if I can claim whole device cost under salary sacrifice every year.

Last year my out of pocket after all benefits was about 850$ for iPhone 13 Pro Max 256GB for which I am getting 1020$ Trade-in. If I wait another year, will lose the Trade-in return.

was about 850$ for iPhone 13 Pro Max 256GB for which I am getting 1020$ Trade-in

you'll need to pay tax on the difference.

As a long time apple user and a supporter of the 30-pin to lightning change…. I am in agreeance. It's time for Apple to accept it or offer both ports.

      • +1

        … or offer both ports

which of course will simply never happen — at least on iPhones.

      • It would be no surprise if they decide to take out the ports at all. With iPhone 14 they already took out sim slot for US version.

  • Better to sell your device on FB-M or GumTree for cash

can't wait for op's next post "got scammed on gumtree selling iphone, what can i do?"

😂 I am not going to try sell in FB or Gumtree. There are lots of listings for already that aren’t sold. Don’t want to sit on that.

        • I understand the sentiment, and also I guess the timing if there's a flood of similar devices, but I wouldn't discount FB/Gumtree outright… unless of course the Trade In offer is within cooee of 2nd hand prices as per Drakesy's and Kib33's feedback below.

You should get around $1000-$1100 for the phone second hand if you want to get the most out of it.
    Then salary sacrifice the max.

  • Mobile Monster will give you at least $1050 for working, up to $1150 for an excellent condition.

More money and safer than FBM or G’tree.

Unpopular opinion: Instead of trying to game the tax system, why don't you help out the government as Australia's finances are messy at the moment. Apple have hundreds of billions in their bank acct, you don't need to donate money to them.

The last time I checked, most of my tax money is going via centrelink payments to boatloads of people who came in and not contributing to the taxes but put more money into their pockets with their “Cash jobs” and “Cash Only Businesses”.

Saving few 100 dollars once a year by a family that pays large sum of taxes using legally available provision won’t make dent to Australia’s finances. Take care, mate.

  • Apple website shows I can get $1020 for my phone

usually this is issued in the form of apple gift card, and then you can decide if you want to use it for your new iphone purchase.

    • They refund the trade in to your method of payment.

Once your trade-in has been received within the appropriate time frame and in the stated condition, and we have all required identification information, we’ll refund your payment method

in regards to in store , you can trade in your device on the spot and get an apple gift card for it. You can then use this apple gift card immediately in store and pay the remaining $1079 on card or however you wish to pay. Just be mindful that they may not have the colour/gb you want in stock during first few weeks of release. Another option for you is Jb Hifi or The Good Guys have trade in programs as well where you can trade in your phone online and they also give you a gift card however JB and TGG email you the gift card straightaway so you can get that gift card now and then use it to purchase the new iPhone from either of them. An excellent condition iPhone 13 pro max 256gb will get you a $1000 gift card at TGG or JB which is $20 less than apple but do remember you can get discounted JB and TGG gift cards at a variety of places to help the lower cost even more for you. JB and TGG then just require you to them the phone within 2 weeks of getting the gift card.

    EDIT:
I forgot to add that officeworks have a trade in system exactly like jb and TGG and they will give you $1100 for an excellent condition iPhone 13 pro max 256gb.

    • Excellent. Thanks. Will check the office works option as well

  • Phones paid by gift cards may not be eligible for salary sacrifice, ask your company/salary sacrifice provider first
