What Do You Think about The RRP for The First ASUS Foldable Laptop?

The spec. is out there, I don't have issue with that, but look at the price !
If you are one of those who is thinking to get it now, I am all ears to know your reasons.
I may bite the bullet if the RRP here is USAU$3499

RRP in the states is US$3,999 (AU$5,922), before their taxes, or £3,299 (AU$5,636)

Not much of a shock that ours is $6,999 inc taxes

i think it's funny, but some idiots will end up buying it. for 7 grand you can have at least 2 top of the line desktops, peripherals included.

    • +10

But those desktops aren't laptops are they? With a foldable screen?

      • +1

nope, they'll last much longer, with easily replaceable components. this is just a tablet with a big point of failure

        • +4

My point was that it serves a very different purpose. They're not equivalent.

A desktop clearly suits you - that's awesome! But maybe it doesn't suit whoever buys this?

It's also not idiotic to buy one of these if it's fit for purpose in ways no other options are, or if the person buying it has a lot of money and 7 grand isn't much to them. Don't be so quick to judge.

          • @CaptainMaverick: any equivalent to this device you could buy tenfold for 7 thousand…

it is pretty dumb, though if you have enough money to waste 7 k on a proof of concept like this, you've clearly got more money than sense.

    • +7

Or… hear me out ….. you could buy like 3 cows…. some hay included… BAM…. free milk for life….

I am a big desktop fan…. but your comparison still hurts my brain…

      • +2

When you say you're a big desktop fan, like how big? 12cm? 23cm?

      • You know what, I’m going to head to the markets on Monday. Genius. And once daisy is done with milk, I can eat her! Pet, milk and meat. Perfection

      • "Why buy that steak when you can buy 10 cartons of milk for the same price! You get the same protein etc. Idiots buying steak….!"

        • -1

more like why buy a steak when you can buy a $1000 steak

my comparison was meant to show how ridiculous the price is.. a real 1:1 is just going to make it worse..

          • @[Deactivated]: Is it ridiculous for that sort of technology in that device? What is the 1:1 equivalent with the same technology e.g., the folding screen etc.

Im fairly certain there isnt a 1:1 equivalent. It's more than you'd pay. But that doesn't mean it's outrageous.

            • @CaptainMaverick: Yes, it is. the folding screen is not solving any problems, or bringing any great features to the table, all it does is make a fragile device even more fragile, for 7 grand. it's ridiculous, but if you want it, go for it, your money.

              • @[Deactivated]: I don't want it, but others might. I won't judge them for 1. Wanting it and buying it because they want it. and 2. Having the money to buy it.

The folding screen solves the problem of wanting a larger screen but not wanting to carry a larger device. Clearly some people want that. You don't. That's ok! I don't. That's ok too! Other people want it. Cool!

What other people spend their money on (generally) isn't really an important concern.

    • +1

What good are 2 desktops when you need something portable?

      • if you need something portable, you can get it for less than 1 k, 7 grand for a bendy screen is a joke

  • +7

Foldable laptops are a solution looking for a problem. No one wants a 17" tablet, no one wants a touchscreen for a keyboard, the only real benefit is if you haul it and the extra keyboard somewhere you can unfold it and have a 17" monitor to work on, which is more about trying to look fancier than everyone else than actually being particularly practical.

    • +2

Its a marketing error, should be foldable tablet with bonus keyboard.

    • I don't want this but I do want a 17" tablet.

      • I really wish there was some mashup of the LG Gram 17 and a Surface. It'd be wonderful. I couldn't care less about how much room it takes up in my bag, but the Gram 17 is lighter than bendy here and a really nice laptop to boot.

  • -1

Probably cost $200 bucks to make. Sells for $6999.

    • +2

i feel like this statement would have more impact if it was such a gross over exageration

      • What do you reckon cost price is for one of these?

        • Retailer GP is probably 16-22% on something like this

Supplier cost to make, a touch more than $200

        • Haven't build one yet, ASUS probably take 15% (profit), delivery guy take 5%, shop front take 30%, government take 10%
So it be probably around 2-3k?

        • What do you reckon repair price is on that stupid screen when it snaps?

          • +1

@brendanm: Hmmm, looks like you folded it wrong.

  • +14

    aren't all laptops foldable ?

  • +1

I dont know, it seems these foldable screens on laptops are the next 3D tv's.

    • didnt they go off with a fart..

  • +2

This is clearly one of those "look what we can do products" that only die hard tech fans are going to buy.

I simply can't imagine what the use case would be for this product that is not already being serviced in the market.

  • Imagine

What Do You Think about The RRP for The First APPLE Foldable Laptop?

    Vegans go WILD

  • For that sort of money I'd want an absolute CAST IRON guarantee it wasn't going to break, and an instant replacement if it did, Never gonna happen, I know.

I won't be in the market for one in any case.

  • does look shmiko

  • Halo/first adopter product. Will find sales with the too wealthy to care & "I have a corporate card" crowd.

Not worth buying if you actually want something worthwhile. V1 is never good.

  • +1

It's got the "early-adopter's tax". Most of those who are willing to pay for new tech will understand that and don't mind paying for a new product that will likely be superseded very soon.

(And then are those that work in the industry that want it, but don't want to pay out of their pocket - so will use the company's IT budget to purchase it to play with! lol)

  • +1

Maybe if it could be rolled into a tube I might consider.

    • Can you imagine like a 30+” rollable monitor. Architects, planners, draftsman, artists. Hell that’s a properly novel product which would be worthy of the price tag. I never understood the purpose of foldable screens really.

  • +1

They are for showing off right now… if it would cost $100 there would be nothing to show off, the big price is a "feature" for the target audience of people that have enough money to not care about the price, just the status.

Lambo's have a dumb price… that does not stop people from buying them again for the status symbol.
