Are There Cheap off Market GPS Trackers for Cars?

Just curious if it is possible to install GPS tracker for cars that you can hide somewhere.

This is to cover theft type scenarios.

    Theft of spouses car?

    • Sorry I don't understand.

He's implying that you're not really using it for tracking your car if it gets stolen, more that you want to track someone e.g. your spouse.

What kind of car do you have that you think people will steal it?

        • You should imagine if there was a meet up with OP in attendance…

    Apple Airtag

    • Yep pretty much. Hidden one on my trailer and very surprised how great it works.

      • 3rd vote for an air tag, I have one hidden in my glovebox and also on my mountain bike, both work great and luckily never had to use them for their intended purpose.

    • But isn't this based on bluetooth? So the range would be few hundred meters only?

    • +4

The problem is that the Airtag will warn the thief that an Airtag is following them as a safety precaution to stop people from slipping them into someone's bag and tracking them unknowingly. You can even make it make a sound to track it down: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGh7-IuPRR4

So anyone driving that car who has an iPhone will know and can shut you down very quickly.

    Nice try.

OP it's always best to be completely open and honest as the people here on Ozbargain are really kind, helpful and non-judgemental.

    You could have said:
"I saw this nice lady coming home from work the other day, so I decided to follow her. I got on her bus and sat close to her for 45 minutes, I started to feel something. She exited the bus and walked home, I continued to follow, discreetly. She entered her small 2 bedroom house, I know it's a 2 bedder cause I peeked in the windows and counted. The house has really convenient bushes making it hard for any neighbours to see me. After watching her for around 2 hours I decided I really liked her and wanted to know more about her. What better way than placing a tracking device on her 2011 Toyota Corolla."

So, does anyone know of any good tracking devices suitable for the above scenario? Budget less than $100.

    /s

    • That makes things clearer. Cheers.

lol. Looks like you have lots of free time and seems to have given this a serious thought.

googled something on this… it might mean OP could get jail time, depending on use case.

    GPS tracking laws in NSW
In New South Wales, it is an offence to install a tracking device to track someone without their express or implied consent. The maximum penalty for an individual is a fine and/or 5 years imprisonment.

Part 2 Section 9 of the NSW Surveillance Devices Act 2007 No 64 states.

    1. Prohibition on installation, use and maintenance of tracking devices
      (1) A person must not knowingly install, use or maintain a tracking device to determine the geographical location of:
      (a) a person—without the express or implied consent of that person, or
      (b) an object—without the express or implied consent of a person in lawful possession or having lawful control of that object.
Maximum penalty: 500 penalty units (in the case of a corporation) or 100 penalty units or 5 years imprisonment, or both (in any other case).
      (2) Subsection (1) does not apply to the following:
      (a) the installation, use or maintenance of a tracking device in accordance with a warrant, emergency authorisation, corresponding warrant or corresponding emergency authorisation,

out of context but that's for the useful info. appreciate you spending time to google and paste your findings here.

  • All the traceez ones now charge a $15USD/year licence fee due to google changing the way their licencing works for maps. Be aware of that.
I use one and it is great other than that charge.

  • "to cover theft"… riiiiiight.

Get on eBay and type in 4G GPS tracker.

Or just use an AirTag, the number 1 choice for professional stalkers and creeps everywhere…

  • Did you try this magic site called Google?

There are chit loads of them.

    stalker alert

    • Lots of those on OzBargain for some reason. Maybe stalkers really like their bargains?

The Apple tracker things are pretty reliable. Every second person has an Apple device to relay the location back to you. Sure it might notify whoever steals the car that they are being tracked after a while, but if you hide it properly are they really going to stop and pull the car apart to find it knowing that their location is being broadcast back to you?

    • What is the range of apple tracker?

      • +1

See link above in previous reply - up to 100m in ideal conditions to any Apple device (not just your own).

        https://theconversation.com/remember-apple-airtags-and-find-…

        • Thanks a lot. This looks great. We were looking for something for a dog as well. Just buy a few airtags

          • @yjun355: 👍 I bought some silicon Airtag holders for pet collars from Amazon.

      • +1

What Shorty said, up to 100m away from any of the millions of compatible Apple devices in Australia. There's a good chance your car thief's own device will be relaying the tag location back to you. And if not, then the many hundreds of devices they drive by will be.

        • Thanks

          • +1

@yjun355: Best part is a simple button cell battery will charge the tag for at least a year. It's a clever way to leverage the mass adoption of Apple devices.

  • “ThE GoveRnMenT iS TracKInG mE wITh tHaT VaCciNE!” Umm nope, people are literally paying so a corporation can track your every move.

What’s so special about not this car it needs a tracker? Just get theft insurance and pick up a new one IF it actually gets stolen.

    • -2

      What's IF?

      • You can't be serious. Are your comprehension skills that poor?

        • -1

Not sure if comprehension but probably surprised for the obsessive and mono-thematic "you are tracking someone for no good"

Give the benefit of the doubt.

May be a concern and caring parent wishing to know where the kids are.
Or where the stolen car is dumped.

          • +1

            @LFO:

            know where the kids are

What kids? You have to be minimum 17 or 18 to be able to drive by yourself. If they're still tracking 'kids' at 17, then that's another thing.

And also, what kind of car does the OP drive (which they've failed to answer) that they think it'll get stolen?

            • -1

@kerfuffle: No kids of your own, I presume.

New South Wales had the lowest reported theft rate, at 1.8 (per 1000) largely owing to it having Australia's largest fleet of registered vehicles.

1 in 500, not a lot. The good old days of someone using any coat hanger and hotwiring and gone thanks to immobilisers and better locks. I can’t remember the last time someone I knew had a car stolen, but the ones I can remember were non inobiliser models. This is why I indicated unless it’s a special vehicle, not a Camry, it’s hardly worth tracking.

  • You can get one from Autobarn. Think they are $250, but there's sales on them pretty regularly.

They are 4g so require a sim. You can then track the car through the app.

As an additional feature, it comes with a remote trigger relay that you can splice in between the fuel pump, giving you the ability to disable the car if it does get stolen

  • I use a tk619 and aldi sim on my weekender cars

  • Not guaranteed but Aliexpress probably has thousand and one different GPS trackers.

  • airtag might not be suitable if he is an andoid user?

  • I just ordered one of these from Aliexpress, I want GPS tracking and also wifi hotspot for the car, 10 years of app access makes it a good buy I think.

  • I used a cheap android phone and an aldi 12month Sim card. Using the where's my droid app. Worked great.
