Open 24 hours for anyone curious.

    • I’ve never understood places like this. Is there really enough customers buying fruit and veg at 2am to justify paying the staff?

      • +2

Yes, me, after I'm done with uni assignments :(

      • Yeah I’ve thought the same thing. My regular fruit shop is open 24 hours also but I’ve only even been during business hours. You’d assume they also paid additional penalty rates after hours also.

      • -1

Cash only payments to employees no penalty rates.

    • You guys have 24 hour fruit and vege shops in QLD?

      • +2

At least 4 in Brisbane that I know of

        • Apart from the chemist at Greenslopes Hospital, the Woolies on airport drive and 7-11 type convenience stores, they are the only Brisbane shops open for 24 hours. We're a global city, so long as its fruit you're wanting.

  • I get these when im in the spa bath

  • Fun fact; despite being called chestnuts, they do in fact not have to be stored in a chest.

    Love roasted chestnuts

  • Would love to eat chestnut, but still can't figure out how to peel roasted chestnuts cleanly despite following all the different instructions on the internet.
Tried fresh from the tree and from stores. Always cut an X shape in the chestnut before roasting. Tried peeling with hands and tea towel but the inside brown membrane never comes off cleanly and always take some of the chestnut flesh with it. Is there some secret trick a fellow ozbargainer can share?

      Steps I found work:
      1. Buy chestnuts
      2. Score them with X
      3. Roast chestnuts in airfryer
      4. Remove little molten balls of lava from airfryer
      5. Peel chestnuts with little parring knife
      6. Throw them straight in the bin because they smell like arse and resemble shriveled balls.

Or better to save some money is to skip step 1, them the rest is redundant.

My wife loves them for some reason, and most seasons I have to tolerate them. But she just uses a small parring knife, I'm sure if there was an easier way she'd know it by now.

I think you may have solved this mystery.

because they smell like arse and resemble shriveled balls

    • Part of it depends on the variety, some just peel more easily than others.

    • I boil and then roast. Practically peels themselves!

      1. Score
      2. Put under the grill
      3. Turn over once to grill other side
      4. When ready, and while still warm, crush them (lightly) under a tea towel to separate the shell from the nut, just like you would when peeling a garlic clove.

I would suggest roasting only a handful first, some varieties taste pretty bland roasted and should be boiled

  • Aussie chestnut normally harvest in autumn. If not stored properly, most of them would have mould & foel taste.

    • that's a neigh for me

    • I was thinking the same, so I assumed these should be imported.

  • And here in Darwin we pay 10-12$ a kilo 😭..

  • Ah, that old chestnut..
