JB Hi-Fi Mobile Extras Vs AppleCare

Anyone one know the difference between JB Hi-Hi Mobile extras and Applecare? Its a bit confusing. There was discount bringing the 2 year plan down to $209

The sales guy at JB made Mobile Extras sound so much better (obviously because of commission), but now looking at the product disclosure statement, the 2 year plan which I purchased doesn't sound any better than going direct through Apple. At least Applecare give you unlimited incidents whereas Mobile extras is 2 per year.

One selling point which I believe the guy was wrong on was that he said now there was new change to the JB plan was that if I wanted to swap/upgrade the phone, JB 9squaretrade) would give me the full value of what I paid for the phone, not the trade in value. Now that sounds too good to be true and I cant find anything in the product disclosure statement on this.

The guy was saying for example in 2 years time when the iphone 16 is out I could just swap my phone over to it and pay the $249 fee. This just doesn't sound right at all.

Here is the link for the disclosure statement

So under section 10.1 it says

Under your JB Hi-Fi Mobile Extras plan, you are entitled (subject to payment of the applicable
service fee under clause 10.3) to return your Device to SquareTrade for any reason and
receive from SquareTrade (at your election):
(a). a new device (New Replacement Device):
(i). of the same model as your Device; or
(ii). if a new device of the same model as your Device is not available from JB Hi-Fi, of a
similar model to your Device; or
(b). subject to clause 10.4, a refurbished device of the same model as your Device or if a
refurbished device of the same model as your Device is not available, a refurbished

So from how this reads for a ii)…. you will get the same model as new or refurbished and in the instance that JB do not have the same model (in this case the 14 pro max) you will get the new equivalent model.

I'll probably go into JB again and ask someone else when I have time late this week. Still in the cooling off period.

The sales guy at JB made Mobile Extras sound so much better

Because he gets a killer commission for selling it to you.

    • How much do you think it is? I've been told it's not more than $5

always go for the manufacturer one vs the store.

  • My gut feeling is that too! Rather than dealing with a third party (squaretrade).

    Looking at the apple disclosure
    https://www.apple.com/legal/sales-support/applecare/applecar…

    (i) repair the defect using new parts or previously used Apple
genuine parts that have been tested and pass Apple functional requirements, or (ii) exchange the
Covered Equipment with a replacement product that is new or comprised of new and/or previously
used Apple genuine parts that have been tested and pass Apple functional requirements

So if the device was completely wrecked, if would seem you would most likely get a reconditioned replacement device of the same model..

Apple have one of the best No questions asked Warranty services ever. I know which one I would choose.

  • My experience with Apple warranty in general is simply fabulous, I've walked out of an Apple store with a refurbished replacement of my phone for even minor issues many times and I've never had Apple Care! This is just off standard 2 year Apple warranty. But keep in mind for Applecare you're essentially just paying for an extra year of warranty and accidental damage protection which your home insurance might already provide.

    • Wouldn't apple need to do this regardless, since it's still an apple device with apple warranty?

      • No, they could say your device is going to be repaired come back in 3 days rather than just swapping it on the spot.

        • well bummer - I ordered off JB

          • @Fasian: Apple will still order any warranty claims as long as it was purchased in Australia.

  • They make far more money on the JB plan, than iPhone thank to Apples generous Margins.

  • So I decided to get the $99 1yr plan from JB Hi-Fi Mobile Extras. For +$250 you can replace wirth o a brand new (same model) phone in a year time, no question asked, doesnt need to be damaged. Seems pretty good considering scratches and battery life of a 1year old phone.

Applecare only replaces IF the phone is not restorable.

    • If only there was someone on Ozb who has actually done this before who could comment. I got 7 days cooling off left

      • I work for insurance, The JB-HIFI PDS is very clear so I think we are good. Pay $250, they will give you a new phone in the store and you ship your old one.

        • It actually says they will give you a new phone in store? Which would mean if they dont have a new iphone 14 pro max in stock they would have to give you the 15 pro max? or in the case they cant get a 14, you would then get a reconditioned?

          • @Sammyboy: "…at your election):
(a). a new device (New Replacement Device):
(i). of the same model as your Device; or
(ii). if a new device of the same model as your Device is not available from JB Hi-Fi, of a similar model to your Device"

"If you are receiving a New Replacement Device, you can choose to either: (i). have the New Replacement Device delivered to you within Australia, or (ii). collect the New Replacement Device from a JB Hi-Fi store nominated by you"

            -

$250 fee guarantees the phone is new. Regarding upgrades, only if they don't have your exact model in stock.

          • @Sammyboy: Do you know how much does the AppleCare+ costs for the 14 pro? Im still waiting to my iphone to arrive lol.

            • @ajinmoto123: Still waiting too. Im sure its more expensive than the 13 pro max lol

  • Any idea if we can cancel the JB coverage and roll to AppleCare?

    • 2 week cooling off period to cancel JB

      • Post that though?

        • Just like any contract. After cooling off period that's it. No more chance to cancel.
