Belong nbn Price Increase and Speed Decrease

Just received the following email from Belong:

We are simplifying our plans and making sure all our customers that are paying the same amount get access to the same benefits.

This change means the typical evening speeds (7pm-11pm) for your $60 home internet plan will change from 30 Mbps to 25 Mbps (download) and from 20 Mbps to 5 Mbps (upload) to match the current $60 Starter plan we offer.

Speeds experienced may be lower due to various factors including your in-home setup and wiring.

Due to increases in the cost of supplying your nbn service, the price of your current internet plan will increase by $5 per month.

So speeds are dropping from 30/20 to 25/5 but prices are going up $5/month as well. Does this seem like a confusing move to anyone else?

I'd been with Belong for 2 years and was happy paying dirt cheap for internet that does what I need it to but will probably look elsewhere (doubt I can stream to two devices with 25/5…)

              • @GEE-SHOCK: yup 99.99% im sure we will be fine. maybe need to restart modem. thats why im setting up my move date on weekend just incase (wfh)

          • @GEE-SHOCK: Might be a little confusion here.. Are you referring to belong's router or the smaller box (modem)?

When I closed the account belong fired off a message saying to tech can be recycled or used with new provider, implying that it's not locked. I might just switch it over to see if true.

            • @Cereal-Bowl: hmm maybe need to clarify are you with FTTP or FTTN.
the original black thing comes free with belong is modem+router in one.
your TP-Link AX1500 is router only. you will still need a modem (if FTTN, i dont know much about FTTP)

              • @CyberMurning: I have two boxes.. The smaller nbn box from line in(modem) , then cabled to wireless router for house coverage. FTTP

Just noticed Auspost is doing NBN now too…

    50/20 or 75/10 @ $55.50/m for first 6 months.

Don't think I'd be game to try though.

    • Yikes.. Not such a great deal after the 6 month discounted period.. Jumps to $74/month. The really odd speed ratios and pricing just seems like it was plucked out of a random number generator.

  • Was looking to sign up with Spintel, whats the first thing I see them requesting? Drivers license, Medicare or Passport number…
In the wake of Optus, yeh nah.. So Spintel loses a sale, Superloop doesn't require this and is offering same price.

Was looking at Exetel too but they've still got that stupid 30 days cancellation notification clause.

There is also Dodo for $53.85/month for 6 months via Whistleout though jumps to $75 after.

    • i just moved to spintel days ago. all good, free belong modem is working just fine. downtime basically when rebooting the modem.

hmm not sure spintel didnt ask any ID for me

      • hmm not sure spintel didnt ask any ID for me

Yeah I thought it was strange for NBN but this is what I got..

        • hmm wait probably they did asked me too.
well, what can we do. are you sure other companies dont ask for ID for new customers?

          • @CyberMurning: Well Superloop didn't but just had a look at Exetel and they do as well. Must only be providers that offer a prepaid phone services as well since it's a prerequisite for those. Superloop only does internet so I guess they don't need to.

            • @bamzero: i see. well maybe it is a good thing too, i mean if your details got hacked someone can easily setup something pretending, thats why spintel ask for driving licence number and also card number (previously just number).

              • @CyberMurning: Looks like they are only asking for license number, not card number.

If they (or other companies) are just using it to verify your name and address details via the government check service that's fair enough, but they shouldn't really need to store it and they aren't specifying whether they do or not.

(It does say underneath "I consent to my information being checked with the document issuer or official record holder via third party systems for the purpose of confirming my identity." so hopefully they're not storing.)

Smooth transition from Belong to Superloop FTTN. Got notification of switchover in the morning, about 5 hours later got cancellation notice from Belong.
Both use IPoE and connection resumed without needing to reboot modem.

    • ah now i know why spintel is having user and pass.. they are with the old school one, pppoe
