Cheap MacBook Air M1 16GB

I'm looking for a Macbook Air M1 that has 16gb of ram. I'm going for this instead of the M2 because the price of the M2 jumps to $2500 when you pick 16GB of RAM and when you select the 512gb storage (to get over the inferior chips they use for the 256gb).

I've looked on marketplace but I could only find the 8gb variant. I dont know how I feel about buying new as it came out in 2020 and for $1800.

What do I do?

How do you get discounted apple gift cards?

I picked up used 1TB ssd + 16GB ram for $1500 on ebay. They come up for that price with good regularity, and many machines would still have apple consumer law 'warranty' remaining. Plenty fast machine. No regrets about not going to M2. My only frustration is that M1 can only use one external display, and the M2 has the same limitation anyway.

I've never been comfortable buying stuff of this value from ebay. What checks do you do to have peace of mind?

        1. buy one with warranty (aka, all of them till november)
        2. buy from a seller with a good track record.
        3. pay with paypal (which unreasonably favours the buyers in most cases)

I'd still be really careful. I bought a 'mint' condition 2020 MacBook Air from a seller with amazing feedback on eBay, they resell refurbs I think, 12 month warranty, and the machine never worked properly. I finally sent it back for their technician to check it, who of COURSE found nothing wrong (again), AND they dropped it (has a chunk missing from the lid now) and they locked me out!
Do not go with Ecogreenpc (TES-AM) whatever you do.
Make sure it's the Apple warranty that's still in effect. But you can never know if it's been dropped.

@DingleBell: Mine had a dud battery ( <80% battery health) and a dint on the side (I knew this before purchase). The battery was replaced by apple under warranty no questions asked. I bought from a private seller.

    • Thas a good price. I kinda regret buying new now, I constantly hit the storage limit as Adobe gobbles as much scratch disc as it can.

What do you need the 16gb for?

    • +1

Thanks to today's bloated apps, normal multitasking with, along with a number of web browser tabs open can easily exceed 8GB. Plus the RAM is shared between GPU and CPU too.

  • AOC: https://www.apple.com/au_edu_5000447/store

    M1 CPU + 16GB RAM + 256GB = A$1554.30
    M1 CPU + 16GB RAM + 512GB = A$1813.90

    AOC = Apple On Campus

Here's the catch (not sure anyone ever got caught by Apple yet but you never know)

Wait, are you saying people have purchased fine from the edu store as a normal user?

      • AOC (store) is slightly better than Edu? :)
