How Do You Use iOS 16 Lock Screen Widgets?

Lock screen widgets first appeared on Android a few years ago and then disappeared. Now the similar feature has appeared on iPhone iOS16. As usual, Apple seems to have taken the idea and made it better. It's implementation is simple and clean. The default widgets are sufficient for most users. If those are not enough, there are also quite a few third party widget apps to add on.

What are the widgets you have put on your iOS16 lock screen? What widgets do you wish were available?

we only want free widgets here

    • True. You do get quite a few free widgets if you own one of those phones :)

I don't find any of them helpful. For me, none of them give me critical information that I need conveyed at a glance, so I prefer a clean lock screen. Anything that requires my attention is satisfied by notifications.

Same goes for home screen widgets. None of them give me enough value to justify losing home screen real estate.

I think it's all a bit faffy. Widgets (whether lock screen or home screen) feel like style over substance to me. I reckon Apple could be focusing their efforts on better quality of life improvements for iOS.

  • I use Carrot weather: left side is the next 5 hours' forecast, next to that is a small temperature & humidity widget, and on the end is a small rain prediction widget.

  • Phone companies are so out of ideas they're introducing widgets like it's some sort of magical new thing. Maybe I'm starting to just show my age but I thought this was a thing 10 years ago and it was found out that beyond the clock, maybe some weather app and some notifications on messages/missed phone calls there really isn't anything necessary.

    • More than 10 years on Android.

  • Right now it’s meh
Waiting for apple to roll out live activities widgets

  • The Windy app has a nice multi day weather forecast widget. I like it better than the stock weather widget. Using that + apple watch battery and stock weather high/low.

  • Just like how they took camera stabilisation and made it better?
    Oh wait…
