Reader/Adaptor for PCIe3.0x4 NVMe M.2 2230 SSD

Good evening everyone. I have a Dell Inspiron 24 5490 All-in-One 10th Gen Intel i7 16GB RAM 256GB SSD Touch FHD, I have recently bought a larger SSD (512GB) to replace the current one (256GB) as It just keeps filling up.

I know all about adaptors/readers for regular HDDs but not so sure about what I need for the SSD I have. When I install the new SSD I want to do a complete clean reinstall of Windows. So what I've been looking for is some way of "reading" the old SSD once I've taken it out.

I've googled it but keep seeing so many different types that I really am unsure of what to get. My PC takes the small - almost square SSD - I bought this one KIOXIA Toshiba KBG40ZNS512G 512GB SSD PCIe3.0x4 NVMe M.2 2230 Solid State Drive. My current one is the same brand etc except it's 256GB.

I know I could transfer some stuff to external HDD's but I'm running out of room on them. I just thought it would be handy to have an adaptor for my current SSD.

If anyone could point me in the direction of what I need that would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

A search for a "USB NVMe Enclosure" should send you in the right direction.

    • Oh jeez yes I should have used "enclosure" in my searches rather than adaptor or reader. When I did that I seemed to always get something with a bigger/longer SSD than mine. So I just searched now using your term and came to this one (amongst others) which I think is the right one for my drive: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/33375921244

M.2 cards - including SSDs - come in 3 common sizes. 2230, which is 22mm wide and 30mm long. 2242, which is 42mm long. And 2280, which is 80mm long. External enclosures and sockets in computers usually take all those three common sizes, unless they say they don't. Like your computer which only takes the shortest size, 2230.

If you buy an external enclosure just make sure it says it takes the shorter ones as well as the PC standard size, which is 2280. It almost certainly will. You just have to move the hold down screw to the correct hole for the size M.2 card you want to put in it.

Google "PCIe M2" or "usb m2 adapter" and check out the Oz sites.

    • Thank you too for taking the time to respond. Hopefully the one I linked ^^ will do the trick.

    • Thank you for that - I'd not seen that brand before. I ended up buying a brand called Blueendless - I've not heard of it before but it was an eBay Plus purchase so I should get the 12% cashback.
