New Car Suggestion Requested

Another day, another car recommendation post.

Main criteria:

  • Brand New
  • Available within about 3 or so months (as per dealer)
  • Ideally within $30k but upper limit $35k
  • Can be SUV or sedan

Although there are nice cars that are meeting 3 of the above criteria, but the wait times range from 6-10 months hence excluded.

Poll shows below some that I have shortlisted that meet all 4 criteria at this stage:

Hyundai i30 Sedan Active: ~$32k
Subaru Impreza Premium: ~$33k
Mitsubishi ASX ES: ~$29k
MG ZS Excite: ~$23k

If anyone of you can suggest any of the above that you have used/driven and can recommend/not recommend, and if you can provide some reasons, that would help guide my search. The MG does save $10k but I'm keen to hear any feedback.

One way or other, drove all.
Subaru - better build, better safety features (Eye sight) , good engine , bonus AWD. low ground clearance though. Expensive to service.
MG - saves you 10k and is popular budget-compact-SUV now. Engine is boring unless you go turbo (less boring). Infotainment is below subpar. No android auto, I think
    i30 - popular. 7 years warranty
ASX - decade year old platform (can be pointed as maybe reliable) . ES version has less safety features compared to all above. 10 years warranty

    • I think they have android auto now. They didn't back in 2018, and there was no way i was going downgrade my samsung.
I bought a Hyundai i30 demo, and its been great.

      i30 is 5 years warranty, not 7

    Which one you like OP?

      This is most important.

The MG will be cheaper, but will likely depreciate more % wise. Mainly due to ‘ChiNA CaR BaD’ perception, but they are definitely built down to a price. The others have good rep and will likely hold value a bit better being from established reputable brands.

Other than that, just pick the one YOU like most. Drive them, sit in them front and back, determine if they’ve got enough luggage space, which one you like the look of or favourite colour etc. it doesn’t really matter what reason you use.

Ultimate there is no ‘beat car’ and you’ll prefer things different to internet people.

    • Once supply returns late 2023. Used car prices will slowly drop for all models.

Add the fact EVs are taking over. Unless it's a modern car with very low mileage hybrid. Most new petrol car prices will drop faster than you think.

      • Supply MIGHT return in late 23. We all thought it would be back to normal now, but has proven wrong.

EVs are going to significantly change the market, especially in the hatchback/compact SUV areas. EVs are definitely going to affect used car prices but everything is so weird right now it’s hard to predict what will happen.

MG and pocket the extra $10k

Or, pick anything off that list and get a less than 12 month old, low km demo/used one and pocket the difference. Let someone else eat the initial depreciation.

Have you seen the prices for those? They're like $10K over RRP (in the case of hybrid Corollas). I'd rather wait and slug it out on public transport/walk everywhere (as I've been doing for the past six months)

Yep… our local Toyota dealer rings up every few months and asks us if we want to sell them back the Hybrid Corolla we bought from them just prior to Covid. I took it up to them and they offered us a shade more than what we paid for it back in 2019. And if that is their offer, I know they are going to sell it for near new price.

But still, there are some deals to be had on the above models by buying low km, almost new.

  • Just because the dealer says it's three months doesn't mean it's going to come in three months. Was told end of October for my Corolla. I'd be lucky if I get it end of the year …
