Optus Customers - Are You Staying or Leaving?

I'm an Optus customer and likely moving to Telstra after this since they're not offering us anything to stay. Are you staying or going?

    • Im in this same boat. Better value to wait it out then to pay the device fee

    • I am stuck with them due to the same deal… and prefer not to pay them more. On the other hand it looks like they only had my very old passport details which I dont care much about anymore…

Optus better have some bargains, else bye

  • So why does Optus hold onto the information of former customers?

Is this not against the law?

  • I expect following the mass exodus Optus will bring out some hard to resist deals to entice people back. Stay strong!

    • If you're in the "data will leak anyway" crowd and just after a better deal, it will probably be better to leave. I doubt Optus will reward loyalty.

  • I'm trying to cancel my post paid uncontracted account but the slimy f**kers on chat keep cycling through bots and "humans" - been trying for 2 days. Regardless I went to belong for Telstra 5G - 80Gb data - $35 - GIDDYUP!

    • OK - called up the number instead and the person was very helpful and helped cancel within 10 mins.

  • I'm only with Optus now as I'm between Telstra plans. Still waiting for JB/TGG to offer a decent gift card with the mobile plan

  • So, I've switched from Optus for my internet and mobile.

But as an FYI for those intending to replace their license and seek reimbursement from Optus: based on my discussion with the rep the reimbursement will be by providing credit on your optus account, not via a direct payment.

ie effectively Optus will be paying themselves to reimburse you for costs related to ID replacements even if you've closed your account(s).

Will optus delete your data, as you are no longer their customer? Considering the data breach.

I'm hoping they will change the policy now for the customers who are leaving.

      • Probably not given it appears they'd retained data for customers that didn't have active accounts for years.

  • I only ever got a prepaid Sim to do a port over deal to Telstra and Optus have sent me an email to kindly inform me they have disclosed my information… I hope these guys go broke. Honestly if it was an API exploit that was so simple they deserve to lose everything

  • Here's the wording of the message on Optus' customer help line confirming they intend to reimburse license replacement costs via account credit:
"…We will be in touch with specific guidance over the coming days if we consider there is a need to change your driver’s license details.

When we get in touch with you, we will place a credit on your account to cover the replacement cost, if any. We will do this automatically so you will not need to contact us."

(this was the customer retention line. No idea whether this applies to people without an active account)

That's cool. So people like me who haven't been with Optus for years but had everything stolen just have to sign back up to Optus and give them my hard earned money in order to receive compensation? Crooks.

For security reasons we’ll just need a few details… please have some ID, such as your licence, Medicare card, or passport handy

    • if this is the case, this will be the reason I move away from them

      • Each network has its max capacity, which means the people staying will have better connection, speed, etc. On the other side, the customer gaining network will be worse.

  • FYI, I no longer have an account with Optus but my data was still stolen.

"It is with great disappointment I’m writing to let you know that Optus has been a victim of a cyberattack. As a former Optus customer this has resulted in the disclosure of some of your personal information. "

I pay $24 for 80GB a month mobile. Too good to leave.

    • Dang how did you score that?

      • One day, 2 years ago, I went into an Optus store to buy a 5g home modem and the salesman just offered it to me to switch my mobile provider to Optus.

Edit. It was just 60gb at the time but has been upgraded to 80gb since.

    • god damn im on $50 for 80gb and 4gb roaming and I think thats good. $24 !!!

      • I pay $49 for 30gb. :(

      • You are on the same plan as me it seems GoodQuestion. Have you checked your account data, they should have increased your monthly data like they did for me.

      • No joke. I just got my latest bill today and they've jacked the price to $53.

I will now be leaving Optus.

Come to Boost, its my 3rd year with Boost, and their service is great. Optus needs to introduce something with exceptional value for money in these financially challenging times.

  • My data being published online again isn’t going to phase me 🤷‍♂️

  • Why is the huge trove of data even needed in the first place for a $20/month phone plan?

Optus is definitely negligent but may have been used by the media as an easy scapegoat when they were legally obliged to collect those information. The cynic in me thinks big data collected can be sold or used to turn Australia into a police surveillance state.

  • I would suggest everyone to stay for now, wait till they fixed it or at least finished trying to fix it. collect all the credits or benefits of losing your data before you leave.

There is nothing much to lose since they already got all of your data stolen, might as well wait till they are done with compensating or damage control so you know what you get before you bug out.

    • I doubt there will be any benefits for us. Hardly get the driver licence replace. Oh, and another singtel company in AU has data breach as well. Good luck using these sing companies

I'm with voda. Hardly get good signals anywhere. Telstra is too expensive. So I'll be moving to Optus.

The whole point is to move away from optus, not other way round.
