Casual E-Sim for Weekly Hikes

Hi guys,

I like going for a hike weekly/fortnightly but with my Kogan sim there's little chance of having reception in most places I visit. Is there an e-sim (preferably Telstra) that doesn't cost an arm and a leg that I can activate when I'm out in the country? Ideally, I would like something without a plan, but not sure that exists

Thanks in advance

  • Telstra retail network customers don’t support esim yet

Does Kogan support wifi calling? If you’re overseas and on a network that supports wifi calling you’ll also be able to send and receive SMS while on wifi.

Out in the country, not out of the country - OP is saying that his current sim doesn't get him cellular coverage when hiking, even less chance of having wifi out there

      • Well I’m a moron lol.

Also I’m apparently wrong, Woolies Mobile has esim

        • The long-term expiry from woolies could work. $60 for 6 months, but doesn't offer full Telstra coverage.
Another option is the Optus Flex 1GB $1 1 Day. Though don't know how that works in terms of subscription. Can I just resubscribe the next time I want to use it?

  • I'd go with the cheapest boost prepaid, cos it uses telstra network

    • Unfortunately, they don't offer esim yet

  • Unless your hiking activity is spontaneous, there's plenty time to swap sims? The best for cheap doesn't exist, you have to go with Telstra e-sim or cheaper boost normal sim.

    • That's a fair point. Was just looking to see if there is something that combines everything in a neat little package.

Get a cheap old-school phone with buttons for less than $50 or so and use the temp sim in it so you don't have to worry about looking for e-sim plans or having to swap sims every time you go on a hike. One massive bonus is the multi-day battery life of these phones which would most certainly come in handy (or could even save your life) if you happen to get lost in the bush.

That telstra casual plan is $30/6 months wtth 300MB data, enough for checking maps, emergency calls for me.

Though here in VIC they are not that much better than Vodafone, Optus within 100kms of Melbourne, IMO.

Emergency calling uses any available network - not just the one you’re subscribed to - so if you’re thinking about ability to make SOS calls you can on Telstra without a Telstra sim

If you’re really worried about safety I’d recommend a personal locator beacon - I bought one for solo hiking about $250 at BCF and it lasts 10 years
