Debit Card with Rewards Westpac Vs St. George

I was just wondering which debit card has the better rewards with it. I know they both under the Westpac group but have heard they got different rewards things. St. George with the my rewards hub and Westpac just with its own rewards. Has anyone used either or both of them and are they any good. Also would love to hear in the comments what kind of discounts you can get from either.

I have never held a St George banking product, so I cannot give you any insights on that.

However, my experience with Westpac debit cards is that the offers you receive under the Rewards & Offers section are generally rubbish. (Well, to me, they are rubbish, because they are pretty much irrelevant to me.) Here are the offers currently available to my debit card:

    • A 3 month free trial of Flash (the streaming service) - only available to new Flash customers
    • Access to the Dining Deals app (which apparently gives access to discounts at many eating places across Australia, but I haven’t tested this)
    • Up to 25% off the Best Flexible Rate at participating InterContinental, Crowne Plaza or voco Hotels and Resorts
    • 12 wines for $79 (plus free delivery) through Naked Wines
    • Join Sephora Beauty Pass and get 15% off your first order using a promo code available to Westpac customers (minimum spend $75)
    • 20% off full-price styles at Wrangler, Riders by Lee or Lee Jeans using the promo code available to Westpac customers
    • Up to 10% off theme parks and car rental through Klook
    • 20% off all full-price footwear at UGG
    • 20% off full-price items at Speedo
    • $10 off for new subscribers at Who Gives a Crap
    • 25% off selected items at The Iconic (minimum spend $125)
    • Discounted movie tickets at Neat Ideas

There are two other offers that are currently missing from the Rewards & Offers section, but I will note:

    • Access to JB Hi-Fi Solutions (which can be summed up as JB Hi-Fi’s version of The Good Guys Commercial, but with generally worse pricing)
    • Access to a special Samsung EPP (Enhanced Partnership Portal) with special discounts (i.e. up to 15% off the RRP) on a range of Samsung products.

You will see from time to time cashback offers from Westpac appear as deals on OzBargain. So far, this has only been available to Westpac credit card customers and can only be claimed on eligible spend on Westpac credit cards. Recent cashback offers for Westpac credit card customers include:

    • Spend $150 at Myer, get $15 back
    • Spend $50 at First Choice Liquor, get $10 back
    • Spend $50 at BWS Online, get $10 back
    • 5% cashback on your purchase at participating Ampol locations
    • Spend $60 at JB Hi-Fi, get $10 back
    • Spend $60 at Adore Beauty, get $10 back
    • Spend $200 at New Balance, get $50 back
    • Spend $75 at Toys R Us, get $10 back
    • Spend $70 at Chemist Warehouse, get $10 back

Westpac are not as generous to its debit card customers in terms of cashback deals when compared with Commonwealth Bank.

    • I saw I have to deposit 2000 each month to get it. Do you happen to know how fast the bpay is to transfer from this account to another bank. Like is it same day.

      • BPAY? I'm assuming you mean bank transfer.

Westpac supports Osko and seems to have a high daily limit for Osko, so if you send another account $2,000 and that account supports Osko, that account will receive the funds within seconds.

If for some reason the bank transfer does not go through Osko, it should be available either later on the same business day, or the next business day.

  • Haven't paid attention to these minor rewards. The only reason I signed up for a Westpac debit card is to waive the annual fee for the Westpac Platinum CC which gave $500 in woolworths gift cards. I still retain the debit card because it doesn't require a monthly deposit for people under 30. Once, I hit that age, I'll cancel the card.

It's a lot better to use the HSBC Everday Global to get a flat 2% cashback for paywave purchases (not online).

  • Having worked for westpac (which owns St George) do not go with St George. Their entire database uses COBOL a programming language developed in 1959 (https://www.techopedia.com/definition/3911/common-business-o…) entire system is older than MS-DOS and doesnt recognise mouse input. The entire organisation is backwards and untrustworthy.
