What Do You Use a VPN for?

I see so many VPN deals but other than using it to jump to US Netflix I see no other reason to use VPN.

If you say it's for privacy, I say please, you ain't that important.

So, what do you use it for?

    Nice try FBI

I see no other reason to use VPN.

    Never sailed the high seas?

    • +3

Been on the high seas for years with no vpn. At the point I am convinced it matters little here

      • +1

yep, if they want to trace you, they can
        .

    • You don't really need that to sail the high seas. I've never known anyone who'd got into trouble for that.

Optus: breathes sigh of relief finally someone that understands us.

If you're thinking about buying a thing simply because it's on OzBargain and you have no idea what to do with it… Congratulations! You've now reached the Silver Tier of your OzBargain membership đŸ„ˆ

    • Yeah I suspect the majority of VPN owners here on Ozbargain did not actually pay a cent for their VPN subscription.

People just like to claim all the free stuff regardless of whether we need or want it.

    • But I didn't pay much for it - Surfshark with Shopback. I figure I've got about 18 months left to work out a use for it 😃. I will be keeping an eye out here. 😀

      • +1

you can use it to get netflix for cheaper and you can use it for geo-locked content and etc

    • Where does the Gold start?

      • How many eneloops do you have?

  • Privacy - and Kodi.

    • Tell me more about Kodi. I got debrid.

      • If you have debrid, you won't need VPN

My 3 year Nord sub just expired.

I think I only ever used the VPN 5 times and all for OzBargain related reasons.

    • What's that?

      • What's what?

        • What's that OzBargain reasons :D

Our government is data retention happy and makes regular internet/computing blunders. I'm not extremely strict about it, but I use VPNs as much as possible, because even if what you're doing right now isn't important, it could become important at any moment.

I want to normalise keeping one's internet usage private. If we can't do that, it's a slippery slope into a much more authoritarian kind of internet.

    • +7

Yep. Just one little extra FU to the state's prying eyes and dirty fingers. They all add up.

      • Lots of VPN's are run by the State!

        Your Govt say hi.

        LOL!

Buying SlavOz clones on the darkwebs.

    Downloading lots of Linux ISOs

  • getting around geolocation issues while on hotel wifi on holidays (and general security of open/hotel wifi)

that's really the only reason to use it.. otherwise you're just paying a fee for nordvpn or whoever to inspect your traffic and sell it to the highest bidder.

    • Doesn’t work too well any more with streaming services etc, most vpns have been sniffed out and the keen obstacle dodgers have to use other trickier means to get past it
at which point why bother using it for geolocation.

The answer to OP’s question is privacy, which the “you’re not that important” remark proves he doesn’t understand.

I'd argue that the $69 buck left in my bank account is very important and I don't want to lose it while checking my bank account using free WiFi.

    1. Torrenting
    2. Bypass Geo-Locking content.
    3. Whilst I need to connect to internet using someone else's WiFi (include work WiFi)

I have purchased few years of PIA's VPN when they had 90%+ cashback, this is used for Torrenting and bypass geo lock, I've also setup a personal VPN in my home server for me to access internet when I'm at work, so work won't know what exactly I'm accessing, as well as access devices within my house, using VPN is slightly safer than just port forwarding all those devices.

    • creating new accounts on forums that you've been banned from
    • trolling on forums using different accounts
    • useful when leaving Google reviews

Here's one way to use 2x VPN's (Nord and PIA): Install 4x browsers (chrome, edge, firefiox and brave). Use NordVPN as your default that all apps use and are connected to as soon as you boot up. Go into Nord settings > split tunneling and select 'disable VPN for selected apps' — then add firefox and brave. Use chrome as your main browser which is connected with Nord. Open firefox and install PIA browser extension. Open Brave to surf with no VPN (some websites won't connect if they detect VPN, e.g. no VPN for Coles, BWS, Liquorland, Bunnings, Woolworths). So this gives you 4 browsers with 3 different IP addresses. Open each browser and type 'what's my ip' to double check. Don't forget to clear cookies and keep note of which browser uses what VPN like in the image below

What Do You Use a VPN for?

I used the Vendor Part Number when ordering consumables.

    • Well I use a MPN to secure my internet connection.

I don't know which ISPs (if any) shape your traffic but a VPN can help you to avoid it. VPNs can also help if you are trying to download stuff from sites that have daily bandwidth caps.

    • +4

This. Used to frequent a pretty notorious site that was straight up blocked at the ISP level. A VPN is great for getting around that sort of thing.

  • Ghost accounts.

  • If privacy is the reason, why not go with the free option Cloduflare Warp?

    • iCloud Private Relay is better, free for MacBooks and iPhones, just a check box to tick. I still turn on foreign VPN for torrenting, a habit.

  • +1

Work. Protecting my staff and allowing them to access company-only data from off-site.

Plus, using torrenting since some sites are AU blocked, so using a US server for that.

    Degenerate porn and linux isos.

Love how you’ve used the euphemism for the one that’s arguably much more socially acceptable!

  • Also acts as an ad-blocker. Ads are huge annoyances with free games,

    • Only some VPNs include ad blockers. It's not a standard feature of a VPN, but some include it stand out from the others.

      • Right…been with Nord since 4 years.

  • Use free vpn to access Australian tv content from overseas

    • Ditto

If you say it's for privacy, I say please, you ain't that important.

So we shouldn't close our curtains at night because we're not celebrities?

We shouldn't prevent our IP addresses being collected and profiled? Ever used torrents to find an old movie that is impossible to find via legitimate methods? Your IP will not be associated with the wholesome action of "looking for old movies" it will be associated with the officially frowned upon "using piratebay".

Maybe you really want to see a newsworthy video that is only available on some dodgy website because of how graphic it is or whatever… and that website has been blocked in Australia. The list is long of reasons one might use VPN. That said, I rarely use one, but I do sometimes and glad they are there if I need one.

  • I only use a vpn on my mobile if my data runs out before the auto recharge date to jump back online.

  • My home computer that I'm on right now stays connected to Nord.

    • why

      • Because data is more valuable than oil and people forget that.
Do you really want your ISP having a record of every single thing you do?
The government has enough information on us already I don't intend on adding to that.

        • Fair enough.
Any reason you went with Nord and not any other providers? How's your experience so far?

          • +1

@lightfoot: I've tried a few providers but Nord has always worked pretty well. when I have issues I just bring them up with support and they are very quick to respond usually. At first I thought support was great I'm gonna give them a pretty good rating in my experience and I've been with Nord for over four years and I use it every day. You may have the occasional website block your IP but it's usually not an issue to just switch to another Aussie server and get the same performance and you may also experience slow downs but to me that's pretty rare. I'm on 50 down 20 up and I get my full speed. I've never detected any leaks whether they be IP or DNS and I did lots of testing initially maybe worth doing that again but I always been pretty confident with the app. I'm pretty comfortable with their privacy/data/logs policies.

  • Cheap netflix, cheap youtube premium, cheap nba league pass. It literally pays for itself.
