I have this and I like it. The headscan gimmick does what it says it does it opens up the soundstage and is convincing enough to make it sound like you're listening from a set of speakers. It's also a good headphone DAC AMP.

  • Not entirely related, but what is the maximum power of the PLAY! 4? The page for the SXFI AMP lists all the outputs at various resistances, but not the PLAY! 4…

    • Hey, the Play! 4's power is 30mW @ 32ohm — it's an entry level USB DAC for casual use. If you're more particular about power output, you can consider the higher end X series ones —> https://au.creative.com/p/sound-blaster?filters=1199

      • Here I thought it'd be better than an Apple USB-C to 3.5mm adapter for power output.

  • "It supports headphones with high impedances of up to 600 ohms"

As much as some Creative products look great, I'll never be able to justify supporting their company after learning about how they've held back innovation in the PC audio space.

Back at the turn of the century, Aureal created A3D - which delivered exceptional 3D sound to headphone users on PCs. This technology was so advanced that a lot of people argue it sounds even better than some of the 3D audio options available today - over 25 years later. You can hear it for yourself here: https://toni.org/a3d/. Long story short, Creative ended up buying out Aureal and all their associated patents - and just sat on them so they couldn't be used. An exciting new innovation, lost to the sands of time because Creative were scared they'd lose market share. A proper shame - perhaps they have changed their ways in the years since, but a real depressing story of anti-competitive behaviour regardless.

Interesting I didn't know about this. I like their products but this will make me second guess my next purchase. Maybe Creative have incorporated parts of A3D into their products. I played Day of Defeat some 20 years ago it was built off the Half Life engine and the 3d audio in that using my SB live card was unreal. I was once banned because an admin thought I was wall hacking. I could hear exactly where people were coming from but it also helped footsteps were super loud in the old games. I don't think I've experienced 3d sound as effective in today's games for some reason.

I've been using this particular product (the dongle) since its launch and it is very good at what it does. I use this with Creative Aurvana Trios, but I've had acquaintances try them with Audio Technica cans (sorry, didn't know the model) and he said it was making his headphones rumble and quake when bassy audio was being played (he was wow'd)

It does take some getting used to though if you like the feeling of music being 'piped' into your ears. What this makes audio sound like is it 'pulls' them further away from your ears, making them sound like you're in cinema or at a live concert venue. This unfortunately means that you will lose some crisp detail, but gain in soundstage.

If you have music that 'sways' from 'left-right-left-right' and it gives you ASMR tingles (for example, Kintaro) this will break that pleasure. This will in fact, break all your ASMR listening pleasure. Fortunately, you can turn the SXFI effect off with a press of a physical button.

The biggest 'win' I find with this is how immersive SXFI is when playing open world games that utilize very good surround sound to convey position. Combined with the SXFI effect, it lends a very good sense of direction as well as 'distance'. For example, in Arma 3, I now get a better feel of not just which direction a sniper is firing from, but also a sense of how far.

This dongle has a USB C port, with one issue I have is that the entire metal body and housing can get loose and start 'separating'. You will notice this in the form of the volume buttons getting stuck. I can alleviate this issue by squeezing the two short edges of the dongle together. If you use it at the PC, make sure the dongle lays on a flat surface and doesn't hang suspended by the USB cable.

I also use the SXFI AIR C which deserves its own review.

  • What is the difference between this and the Sound Blaster X1? They look almost identical.

  • A heads up that if you do purchase from Creative, the transaction will be performed in Singapore, so watch out if you have a card that attracts foreign transaction fees despite ostensibly being charged in AUD

  • I have this, +1 for S-XFI technology. Been an audio head-fi-to-go myself for the last 10+ yrs, this has brought me back to the early days of enjoying the music and good recordings, especially on the go with portable IEMs. Really immersed into the soundtage, although it is kinda weird but i like, just like how Sony has their signature bass* on their DAP. Don't expect it to drive something like DT 880 250 Ohms or sth like that.
I would be gaming with GC7 if Creative happy to send me one haha, but my current setup is quite decent actually.
