Buy Limited Per Customer Purchase Multiple Times

Hello, sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this.

Coles has a deal for 15% off gift cards with a limit of 5 per customer.

Can I buy 5 gift cards and just buy 5 more a couple minutes later at a different cashier or do I need to use a different debit card for the second transaction?

Thanks.

Try another Coles or come back the next day.

There is nothing in the Coles checkout system from stopping you from doing back-to-back transactions, even if you scan the same Flybuys card across multiple transactions or use the same card. However, the only factor that could stop you purchasing gift cards across multiple transactions is the staff.

Purchases of gift cards at Coles require at least one staff member to manually approve the transaction (and additional approvals from a supervisor or manager is required for some purchases of gift cards). If that staff member notices you as you pop back in a few minutes later and they alert management to you trying to purchase more than 5 gift cards, you may find that you cannot purchase any more gift cards. The big unknown is how staff at your local store(s) interpret the 5 gift card per customer limit. In my experience, interpretations include:

    • 5 gift cards per customer per day
    • 5 gift cards per customer for the entire deal
    • 5 gift cards per household per day

I’m not sure where you are based in Tasmania, but the Coles stores I have visited in southern Tasmania do not have that many checkouts (particularly with self checkouts with conveyor belts being rolled out at most of those stores and replacing standard checkouts), so there is a chance that a staff member at a standard checkout will spot you as you make your way back through the store a few minutes later and then proceed to a different standard checkout or the self checkouts.

I’ll illustrate two anecdotes to show how different staff have different attitudes towards the gift card limits:

    • I once had a service supervisor process the sale of 5 gift cards at the start of a gift card deal. When I returned a few days later to do my weekly grocery shop, the same service supervisor came up to me as I was waiting in the self checkout queue and said “I hope you’re not trying to purchase more gift cards.” (I wasn’t intending to.)

    • On the last night of the June 2022 10% off Coles Mastercard gift card deal, I went to a quiet Coles store that still had 20x $100 Coles Mastercard gift cards left on the shelf (which was odd). I purchased 5 through the self checkout, then I politely asked the self checkout attendant whether I could purchase 5 more. They hesitated before they said “yes”, but they also made sure I definitely wasn’t being scammed.

  • My experience has been similar to @WookieMonster, after a couple of these disc GC sales, I'm starting to get a sense of which Coles stores in Melb have very strict interpretations (once per day), and others that are more relaxed. Obviously this flows down from the store management, and this varies. I've found that in probably 10% of purchasing situations, if I ask the staff member nicely, then they'll let me buy another 5 (but no more beyond that)
