Why Am I Always Tailgated by These Specific Drivers?

When I am driving around town in my OzBargain approved Toyota, I always seem to be tailgated by these specific drivers listed below.

Jeep Grand Cherokee & BMW any x series.

I note, I always keep left unless overtaking on any roads. I always stick to my speed limit as well.

I encounter this behaviour from these specific drivers quite a lot!

Any other drivers out there, experience this from those Jeep or BMW drivers listed above? (Not saying they all do it)

Or are you specifically tailgated by certain model vehicles?
Interested to know:)

Yes, I will move over to the emergency lane or to the grass for people who tailgate me…….even when I am doing the speed limit.

Next time read the post where I say I am always in the correct lane instead of saying the opposite and being a smarty pants.

      • -2

you also said My speedo is accurate.

unless its been calibrated professionally it isnt.

    • So by your logic if peeps are hogging the right lane, you shouldn't be tailgating cus its not your job to police right lane hoggers.

      Tf u on about

  • +7

It’s no one specifically, it’s just a$$holes that think their registration and license fees paid for all the road all the time. They fail to realise my $350 road tax and rego pays for the bit of road under my car, just like their contribution pays for the bit under their car. If they want my bit they can pay for my car or back the fark off.
Also some people seem to think 100kph really means between 120-140. No wonder they catch up to us good and level headed drivers. These also seem to be the real ‘wheel men’ that can’t navigate a corner to save themselves. All they know is straight and accelerate.

    • -2

Would be a little unfair not to recognise that there is just as much of a problem with drivers doing less than the speed limit as there is with those who exceed it.

If you're doing 90 in the right lane on the motorway, you're not being tailgaited - you're the bumgater. Move it along.

      • +1

I agree but what I noticed about this was, up until say Tynong (just headed down to Walhalla on the weekend) no one cared about the keep left rule.
Yet after that, the driving became so much better. The rules were actually adhered to.

My issues have always been say on a 60 or 70 road one lane road. Just dangerous driving expecting me to go faster because they are riding me.
        Won't happen.

      • If you're doing 90 in the right lane on the motorway, you're not being tailgaited - you're the bumgater.

Both can be true. Never a reason to tailgate people regardless of the front car's speed

        • -4

I agree tailgating is not ideal but how else would you expect drivers to warn someone who is driving way too slow for the conditions? Not keeping left can be a serious hazard and just like flashing your lights or honking your horn, there needs to be a way to alert other drivers and set an example of how the traffic system works.

          • +5

            @SlavOz:

but how else would you expect drivers to warn someone who is driving way too slow for the conditions?

By not being dangerous, stupid, illegal, lazy, rude by tailgating? Wow, can't believe this needs to be said

            • @DiscountForThee: You do realise the bumgaters are also being stupid, illegal, lazy and rude right?

I don't condone any dangerous behaviour but no point giving some people a free pass while shifting all the blame on others.

              • +1

                @SlavOz:

                don't condone any dangerous behaviour

Great, then you'll never create an excuse for tailgating - glad we are all sorted on that one :D

                • +1

@DiscountForThee: Yep, me too. So now that we've got that sorted, can we move on to tackling the next problem which is bumgating drivers hogging the right lane?

                  • @SlavOz: No one has said slow drivers aren't annoying or an issue - just that someone going a few k's slower than your desired speed is not a reason to drive dangerously and tailgate anyone

                    • @DiscountForThee: How do we get rid of them?

                      • +1

@kyle: Lobby for stronger enforcement and penalties for tailgaters, I guess? Not sure there is much a citizen could do

                        • +1

@DiscountForThee: What about the drivers hogging the right lane and not letting others pass even if they are doing the speed limit?

                          • @kyle: Not sure, but I'd love to hear the legal and non-dangerous solutions to this. Maybe mandatory driver education and re-testing?

                    • +1

@DiscountForThee: We're in agreement again. People going a few ks below or over the speed limit isn't an issue.

But extreme tailgater or bumgaters are an issue. Both of them are just dangerous and should be condemned.

                      • @SlavOz: My issue is the tailgater who chooses to ride my ass in a 60km/hr road.

I struggle to maintain my composure when I know no overtaking lane is possibly.

                      • @SlavOz: There's no such thing. Driving in the right lane 10 below the limit is rude but absolutely not dangerous.

You'd advocate for risking your own life and the life of people around you just to send a message?

If you'd seen the human aftermath of a serious road accident you'd not be so blase about the hazard you're creating by tailgating.

                        • @nigel deborah: And it's attitudes like that which are huge problems on our roads. Slowing down traffic behind you by hogging the right lane creates needless congestion and absolutely raises the risk of serious accidents.

Even if other drivers are patient enough to overtake you by shifting between lanes, ideally they shouldn't have to do this on high speed motorways. Forcing someone to change lanes at 100km/h because you're too selfish to move aside is reckless driving.

          • @SlavOz: In some asian countries, it seems to be normal to flash your lights at cars driving slowly in the fast lane. The drivers would actually move to the slower lane. Do that over here and you get a brake check. My mate learnt the hard way when he first arrived in Australia!

These also seem to be the real ‘wheel men’ that can’t navigate a corner to save themselves. All they know is straight and accelerate.

I had one these guys tailgate then over take me on a straight section of road only for me to catch up when it got twisty. I put the pressure on through the bends until he had the decency to pull over and let me pass.

      • +1

        So you tailgated back?

  • +2

I do found the following cars drive more aggressively/blatantly in general:

    majority of Holden Commodore
    majority of Holden Ute
Half of the BMW no matter what model
more than half of the car with green finishes.
half of the old small white trucks drive really slow, and the other half drive really aggressively, barely one drive them normally.

I do definitely see a few good driver with those models, though it's just the general trend I observe myself in SA with no number to backup my opinion.

  • +7

Compare your speedo to a GPS based speed reading on a flat open road with clear sky and as many satellites as you can. My car reads 4km under at 60 and 5km under at 100, so I tend to do these speeds in the city. All speedo's under-read which is annoying. I also notice this too but only when I am in a small car, I drive a wagon or SUV, but I can be doing 10+ over and because you are in a small car the bogans come out in force even in the left lane, so I understand what the OP is talking bout.

    • +2

Same experience here. Tailgated in the small car, not very often in the wagon.

Interesting about the speedos though. I've done a lot of gps measuring with a few different units to test the speedo accuracy.
On our Micra it's a shallow curve so it's out about 3kmph at 50 and slowly becomes more inaccurate until I need to do 115 to be doing 110.
On the wagon it's spot on until 80km. Then it's 92 to do 90. Then 104 to do 100, 114 to do 110, 124 to do 120 (tested on a private road). I feel like the manufacturer must have done that deliberately.

Safe driving is 20% skill and 80% attitude. People cut in front, tailgate and speed because that's how they've always driven and know they can get away with it.

    • Safe driving is 20% skill and 80% attitude

      Hear hear!

Same with fuel efficiency. Believe someone was commenting they hate people who coast to the red light ahead and they should keep their speed up and go an emergency braking maneuver so they can sit at the lights and do whatever that they fancy.

      • I do agree although those drivers that just coast along to the traffic lights and refuse to use their accelerator a little bit (there are other ways to save on fuel whilst driving) they affect the flow of traffic. I was a “hoon” so I’ve seen it all but from when I became a Dad I drive like one but it makes it hard as I’m very observant on the road, which most don’t do.

  • Could be they are driving “borrowed” vehicles and waiting to see where you park so they can upgrade their ride…

  • Do you owe any $ to the bank? :-)

  • +2

    Dont be paranoid.
    Haply Friday 😷🤣

  • I always seem to be tailgated by these specific drivers listed below

Pickup trucks, newish 4X4 and most BMWs have, in general, a very comfortable/enticing ride inducing to go a bit faster every time.

With that "feeling" anything in front is an obstacle and overtaking is vital.
But before overtaking getting closer and closer and closer is a must.

Yes it happens a lot, not brand specific but rather generic models, usually large enough to muffle noise and road condition.

Ignore them and they will go away.

    • Pickup trucks, newish 4X4 and most BMWs have, in general, a very comfortable/enticing ride inducing to go a bit faster every time.

That is why speedo is there to tell the driver. It isn't a stick your finger out the window and check the indicator and compensate for wind speed.

      • -1

Not true speedo are rarely 100% correct, hence why they give you a few km/h leeway on speeding fines.
For example, we have one of those digital speed signs around the corner from the kids school and my speedo is always 2 km/h more than what it says!!!

        • Not true speedo are rarely 100% correct

I wasn't commenting on speedo accuracy.

If you are driving at 70kmph in a 60kmph zone and get pulled over you can't blame the comfort of being in a late model SUV as an excuse to not driving under the speed limit. You can drive at 60kmph as indicated by the speedo although you might be at 56kmph true speed. You could try using instruments to get true speed but if you get pulled over you'll have to prove the police instruments are wrong (there have been instances where it is not calibrated properly) but 9 time out of 10 you are stuffed.

My comment is people should not be feeling how fast they are and translating that as true speed. The speedo is there for a reason (so read it).

      • The sore point brought by the OP is/was tailgating by particular breeds, not speeding.

Tailgating might happen even if not speeding.
        Pretty different.

    • Maybe we can use your asset appreciating lights to shoo them away at night

  • +1

Mother's in their faux 4wds and Tradies in their utes think they own the road and everyone needs to bow down to them.

People's selfish and rushed attitudes on the roads is a real problem.
Let them sit behind you. Especially if you're doing the limit or in the left lanes.

  • Toyotas, especially OzB approved models, are notorious for over-reading on the speedo, like by 10kph.

    • +3

Maybe it's all just a coincidence that every car being tailgaited just happens to be reading high, and all the tailgaters have speedos that read exact…

  • +1

Definitely does not matter on the type of car, I'd say you just don't like those types of cars for some reason. Considering you drive at the speed limit that would be why some cars tailgate as I dare say you'd be just under most of the time. Most drive just over the speed limit as you don't get fined for doing 2-3 km/h over the speed limit (if not up to 5 but with new technology anything over 5 is a risk of a fine).

  • +2

Are the BMW's tailgating you normally white?

  • +2

I had a culture shock when I was driving in Brisbane - Gold Coast Highway. Everyone is driving 90 on 100 limit all lanes.

    • +2

That's the same in Adelaide. I wouldn't have an issue with someone driving under the limit, but they also drive side by side on multilane roads so it becomes difficult to overtake.

      • +1

too many drivers drive slower than the speed limit sitting on overtaking lanes in Adelaide. so freaking annoying. They leave the middle lane or left lane empty.

      • Same in Brisbane/Gold Coast. They drive side-by-side 90km/h on a 4-lane highway!!!
Wish I took a photo to proof this.

    • +1

Usually not on the right lane but then again those 90km don't actually know they shouldn't be on there. You'll actually end up on the right lane the whole way due to people doing under the limit

  • +2

    No-one tailgates me.

  • +1

On Eastern freeway Vic, I am always tailgated by tradies 4wd and sometimes buses very closely. They don’t realize in an emergency if I brake they will cause serious accident! I wonder why they they don’t have common sense?

    • Common sense would be to move to the left lane. What you don’t understand is that good drivers look a car or two in front of yours!!

    • Which lane are you in?

  • +4

Tradies in my area are next level!

I had one overtake me on a single lane high risk country road. I was travelling at speed limit of 100, with the driver overtaking me at 130km/hr at least. Gave him the bird, he politely responded with same.

A week later I saw the same car, having spun out on the ON ramp to the freeway of the same road (how the hell!), crashed into the embankment, ladders and tools everywhere (he looked fine). Oh karma you are my friend.

    • Did you give home the bird again?

    • Did you tell him he can't park there

  • -1

People that buy those waste of money cars have no brains, hence the terrible choice in car.

Also they think because the cars are a status symbol and not just for transport, that they are better than you. They do not follow the road rules and will tailgate you so they can speed and wait at the next set of lights while you roll past them.

    • spend money you don't have, to buy things you don't need, to impress people you don't like - sure - knock yourself out - YOLO !

I once told a colleague asking which used car to buy - buy the cheapest car your ego can afford - if you need a shiny new expensive car to feel OK about yourself, fine, then you can P that money down the drain - otherwise, a safe reliable vehicle that gets you from A to B for minimum cost - and the debt loan you didn't take out is money in the bank.

  • +1

Maybe just maybe the other drivers need to pee?

  • Just keep doing what your doing. People in life are in a hurry to get nowhere. Don’t change your driving for their idiotic behaviour.

  • Sorry, it was me the whole time.

    • +1

      No, it was me!

      • Look behind you now

  • Carist

  • +1

    Just brake check them. Easy.

    • and provoke road rage ? - sure - let me know how that works for you … ;-)

      • Sure bring it. Careful who you mess with.

  • +2

Put on a sticker "'THE CLOSER YOU GET THE SLOWER I GO'" and fck them.

    • I would drive closer to read what you say

  • Prado's, Pajero's and clapped out Hi Lux's seem to be my tailgater protagonists.

  • Do people that are always in a rush when driving also walk/run at maximum speed when they are on the streets? Probably not…

    • +2

Sometimes, I feel like punching the slow-walkers in the back. Do I have a problem?

  • +3

The reverse applies too. When I'm driving around town in my anything that isn't Toyota why am I always stuck behind a Toyota driver (usually under the speed limit)?

  • Tradies vehicles yws, jeep yes, bmws yes…and in my experience tesla model 3 drivers are also trying to do the same these days

  • -1

Perhaps the cars that always seem to tailgate are from manufacturers that have a more accurate speedometer calibration making them travel faster than most other cars. This is just my theory as to a possible reason, I have found Subaru's to have a very inaccurate speedometer meaning they travel about 10% slower than the actual speed limit. I assume many other manufacturers do this also.

    • most cars are 10% slower on the speedo than actual

  • +1

I’ve been contemplating hard to make a sign/sticker on my car that says:

“Tailgate me = I go even slower!”

    😂😂🤡

  • Ford (R)angers for me!

  • +1

The bmw x5 owners manual specifically states that you must tailgate everyone on the road unless they are in a vehicle of equal size or larger to you.

  • +1

Driving behaviour has become more aggressive and ruder since the end of lockdowns in my view.

Driving smoothly is an art not a science.

Less cost in fuel, less repair and maintenance and a longer lasting vehicle. Allow the extra 5 minutes to be at your destination. It's OK to be late and drive a little slower if the its bucketing fown in rain or the road has degraded.

If I recall correctly. The right hand lane is for overtaking beyond 80km but largely unprosecuted offense.

But it doesnt matter. Cars stop easier and accelerate better than 20 years ago. So it causes a bias that some people drive more aggressively unnecessarily.

You can profile the driver to the vehicle. Salaried truck and bus drivers tend to be the smoothest as there is signficant consequences for doing the wrong thing to that business.

Living in the blue mountains every weekend esepcially over the long weekend, we see plenty of weekend warriors charge up the hill to then stop on at each and every light.

People are in a rush to then stop at a set of lights.

  • +1

When I’m tailgated, I reduce my speed by 2-3 km/h than the road speed limit. The car in back then goes to the other lane and jets off. I then go up to the road speed limit. It works all the time for me.

  • +1

there is the psychological effect in a higher vehicle where if they can see over the lower vehicle in front they tend to look beyond it as if the lower vehicle in front of them is a mere speed bump or slight inconvenience they're tempted to run over - I've seen it with truck drivers (I grew up with truck drivers) so it's an easy affect for them

the other common feature of stupid, uneducated or penis-envy drivers is to imagine that tail-gating somehow shows they are stronger - like get outta my way, I'm coming through and nothing should stand in my way !

it actually shows a serious lack of knowledge and understanding and education when people tail-gate as the increased risk of accident is guaranteed to be their fault at law - yet in the event of a collision they will typically assert 'it was the other driver's fault - they stopped too quickly!'

it's also simple psychology for the unenlightened, that driving a vehicle with power at the touch of a pedal invokes frustration when your majestic progress is inhibited by, especially, a smaller vehicle in front - again for the selfish, rude, angry and entitled this can provoke outrage in the slighted ego - how dare you stop my progress !

And of course, Jeep and BMW SUVs are the preferred choice of Major R. Souls who simply fail on the nice person scale.

  • -2

OP: Why Am I Always Tailgated by These Specific Drivers?…umm, stop peeing in the car for a start.

  • For me its always ford / Holden sedans

  • I don't find any particular car make tailgates me… However when I drive my piece of shit Nissan Maxima I find I get tailgated more than when I drive my better Toyota Crown… I don't brake check anyone but I do at times slow down even more so they just F off and take over me, but I mostly just ignore them.

  • It’s usually the Toyota drivers with dented panels, one headlight and bald bargain tyres that tailgate me. They’re oblivious to anything further than 2m that isn’t directly ahead of them.

  • Do you have an "Ozbargainer" bumper sticker?

  • People who drive BMW (British Motor Werks) are jerks

  • Slow down to see if they keep tailgating or overtake from the right.

  • It's so annoying but I've learnt to just accept it as part of the driving experience without malice or anger . Not like I can change other driver's behaviour. Fortunately I don't drive much and prefer irregular times of travel when the roads are quiet. Its definitely a worse problem in the big cities.

Frequency illusion, also known as the Baader–Meinhof phenomenon or frequency bias, is a cognitive bias in which, after noticing something for the first time, there is a tendency to notice it more often, leading someone to believe that it has an increased frequency of occurrence.

You're being tailgated because you are obeying the speed limit. This makes us seem wierd and slow to the majority of drivers.

    • a lot of the speed limits in melbourne just make no sense anymore, and based on research using a commodore/falcon from the 80's in regards to stopping distances etc

  • Perhaps they are foreign drivers, trying to overtake you in the left lane and you happen to be in front of them. To test this hypothesis, move into the right lane, and observe.
