Recommend Me a UPS for Home Use - Budget: $300

Hi All,

After recent power outage I wish to get a UPS for my PS5, Xbox and 55" TV Sony X85J. I do have a Laptop but would only need to plug that into a surge protected outlet in the low chance that i don't have any battery remaining and another outage strikes.

Please recommend me one, that would best suit my needs and also if it can be bought for under $300 - If there was a sale around the corner, I'll wait for it but would prefer to be able to buy it at the shops anytime (I'm near a JB HIFI, Bing Lee and Officeworks)

I hear Pure Sine ones are the way to go, so if i need to up my budget a bit, let me know. Would like to have one with at least 4 ports, just don't know which models are highly rated.

TIA

  • The correct way to find a suitable UPS.

    1. Adding up the power consumption of your devices that needed backup (in W),
    2. Decide how long you want the UPS to supply power in a blackout (in minutes),
    3. Use a UPS calculator to see the minimum capacity required (in VA), and
    4. Check which UPS has the minimum capacity and can fit in your budget (brand, model, feature).
    • hmmm ok - so it looks to be around 800W maximum *818W exact and would only need it powered for 5 minutes or less.
      https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x85j (153W) + PS5 (350W) + XSX (315W)

Which 1500VA one is the best one to get?

      • Are both your PS5 and Xbox being used on the same TV at the same time?

        • yeah nah i'll go with the 525W one someone recommended below

EBay has lots of second hand bargain UPSs. Recommend looking there for a great deal for $300. You can probably get a true sine wave line interactive decent model that probably needs a cheap lead acid battery. Eaton would be my pick.

Are you actually running both consoles and the TV at the same time?

If it is only 1 console and the TV, that is 450-500W and can be covered by the SMV750CAI APC Easy UPS 750VA/525W

It is line interactive, pure sine wave and third party batteries are easy to buy

    Street price $350

    • thanks for the suggestion - do you own this one too

  • seems a strange need for a ups - these are usually used for modems, security systems or vital computers that require data to be saved before losing power.

OP wants to play games for an hour or two until the storm/street work is over or completed?

    • falling victim to two power outages in a space of a month…had to re download all my stuff twice

      • Are pending/current download's progress lost on PS5 or XSX when there is a power outage?

If your power shuts off and so does your Internet/Modem/Router what does the console do when it suddenly loses an internet connection, or you shut down the console with a download incompleted?

Forget sine wave unless you are running mission critical medical or scientific equipment.
APC is an international brand and I use Eaton.
Powerware is ok as are many others.

Unless you invest heavily in a UPS solution is not intended for long uptimes.
It is intended to give enough time, manually or automatically, to gracefully shutdown the system.

    • ok thanks

      • As you worked out you need 1500KVA or bigger but that still doesn't give you a great deal of runtime.
If you go too much bigger you need a 15A input which a sparky can do for you.
You could do 3 smaller UPSs, 1 for each device, might give you more runtime.

A 500W load on the SMV750CAI will give 6 minutes of run time

Shutting down a console and turning off the TV will take max 1 minute so you will be fine

Stick to APC and Eaton, avoid CyberPower
