Which Website Is The Best to List an Used Car Sale?

I am trying to help my daughter sell her used car.
She was originally trying to take it to a dealer but I persuaded her to sell online.
So I am just wondering which website is the best one.
Do they normally charge?

Car is probably worth around $5000.

She was originally trying to take it to a dealer but I persuaded her to sell online.

Why did you persuade her yet you know nothing about selling a car online?

    • +3

Why did you make the effort to write such unhelpful comment. You could have simply witten carsales.com.au instead. It's shorter and it actually helpful.

      • +1

I agree, it's shorter but as I've never sold a car online, it would have been disingenuous to advise the OP that this was the best website to use when I've never used it myself or any of the others.

  • +8

I only assumed the dealer would offer less.

    • correct assumption

  • As you guessed, we have no experience in selling a car online. I only thought it would be as easy as selling things on ebay. Maybe not?!

    • If you know what you are doing, you would most likely get a better price selling your car online..

Gumtree (Free), Marketplace (Free) and Carsales (charges a small fee) are the most popular places to sell your car online.
      Good luck.

Well, you've been on OzB since forever yet you still don't know how to click on 'reply' when responding to a particular comment so I wish you well selling your daughter's car online.

      • +7

        My bad.
I realised that after I posted my comment.

        • +8

My bad too, OP - my reply reads overly harsh for your click reply omission. I have handed in my click reply monitor badge ;)

          • +4

            @[Deactivated]: No problems at all😊
I don't normally post in forum, and I got excited about getting some comments and posted my comments in a hurry 😊

Come on, it’s not that a big deal. You didn’t have to say that…
You and I, we both know that the Op was talking to you when he posted those comments. That should be enough ?

Btw, it wasn’t me who disliked your comment.

        • +3

Now that you mention it, my comment does read a bit harsh and because OP actually replied to it, I cannot amend it …. the irony!

btw - unlike some others, I don't care about down votes - they're meaningless so no need to let me know you didn't down vote my comment because I have no way of knowing whether you did or didn't.

lol, you do coz I just liked it..

Btw I only mentioned that because I don’t take part in this weird culture of disliking/reporting people’s comments over mere words, basically. To avoid any obvious hostilities, I disclosed that I wasn’t the one who disliked it.

  • Marketplace and Gumtree are the main places now. Carsales is probably 3rd but I believe no longer have a free option.

You will get more selling privately but you also take more risk and have to deal with tyre kickers. You don't even seem sure how much the car is worth. Make sure you do some research as used car prices have been inflated since covid started.

    • Thank you very much for the great advice 😊
I will start looking at other cars prices first.

      • +1

Anyone sane looking to buy is going to check carsales, fb marketplace and gumtree so I don't know if it makes much difference where you list.

  • +1

    Gumtree - free
    Facebook marketplace - free
    Carsales - free under $5k

What sort of car is it? Does it have problems? Does it have rego? Does it have a rwc if required in her state?

    • Rego ia about to expire.
Car was serviced about a month ago and it needs some repairs, quote says $1000ish.

      • What is the car.

        • Holden Barina manual 2011

          • +1

@tomatosauce: Depending on the kms, that's not likely to get anywhere near $5k with repairs needed and no rego. Manual makes it even harder.

For a car like that, I would just send it to auction.

            • @brendanm: True.
              We are happy to negotiate.

              • +3

@tomatosauce: You will likely be negotiating with lunatics at that end of the market, and a manual Barina. Send it to Lloyds/grays.

            • @brendanm: Auction?!
              I never thought about that!
              Interesting.

              • @tomatosauce: It's very easy. I've dealt with Lloyds a number of times. You drive it done, hand over the keys, fill out a couple of forms and leave. Money is on your account ok a couple of weeks. Don't have to deal with dropkicks.

                • @brendanm: Is there any reserve price you can ask for?

                • @brendanm: Do you think you are likely to get a better price than taking it to a dealer?

                  • +1

@tomatosauce: I doubt any dealer is going to touch a 2011 manual Barina in need of repair. They will simply wholesale it out if you even used it as a trade in, and would offer nothing for it.

You can put a reserve, but you need to be realistic. How many kms?

                    • @brendanm: 147000km.
She will probably want 3000 at least.
                      Realistic?

                      • @tomatosauce: I would have thought around 2500, but may get $3k.

                        • @brendanm: Thank you so much for all the info.
I will show this thread to my daughter when she comes back from work and we will discuss our options.
I am now leaning towards taking it to an auction thanks to your comments 😊

                        • -1

I would have thought around 2500

Pre covid sure, in this market I'd be asking $5k. If it had longer rego and didn't need repairs and assuming good condition $7k+. Market is nuts. Advertise it for $3k and it'll like be gone a few minutes after posting the ad.

                          • @apsilon: There is no way it's getting $5k.

                            • -1

@brendanm: I know it sounds like a mad stretch but a 2011 manual barina around 150k done would easily fetch you more than 4.5 grand here in Victoria… I am telling you this Covid inflation has really skyrocketed car prices.
Assuming QLD isn’t that dissimilar, Op should be listing his car online for $5000 minimum.

                              • +2

@Gervais fanboy: It needs work and has no rego. I buy and sell cars relatively often, generally have a decent idea of what things are worth, happy to be proven wrong.

                                • -1

                                  @brendanm:

                                  It needs work

Yeah, I had based that figure of $5k, post repairs.
But yes otherwise without the repairs, $3-$4 grand max and that too Op would be lucky to get.
The average person doesn’t even consider buying a car that needs immediate repairs to be done.

          • +2

            @tomatosauce:

            Holden Barina manual 2011

Definitely under that $5k threshold for Carsales then :D

  • Another question.
Her car rego is just about to expire.
    Only one week left.
    We only realised that yesterday.
(She bought another car a little while ago and we just started looking into selling the old one. So unorganised…)
So, is it better to renew the rego for 6 months or just sell as is?

    • -1

It will take you time finding a buyer, them test driving it and then getting a RWC (if applicable).
If required, you can apply for a temporary rego/permit.

      • +1

Thank you very much for mentioning this!
I just looked up the temporary rego.
And I am starting to get mad at my daughter.
Why didn't she sell the car earlier!
So much more work is involved.

        • She can signup for monthly rego direct debit

          • @Hvrd: Thank you.
I will keep that in mind😊

  • Thank you so much for all the information.
I will show this thread to my daughter when she comes back from work and we will discuss our options.
I am now leaning towards taking it to an auction thanks to brendanm.
Will let you know the outcome once it's done 😊
Enjoy the rest of your long weekend everyone!

I put it on gumtree and facebook. Sold on facebook within 3 days.

  • +2

I listed on carsales, gumtree and facebook marketplace. Facebook got the most hits and was where I ended up making the sale

  • +1

Gumtree and Facebook. Be prepared for numbskulls and lowballers, but don’t entertain them. Stick to your price and it’ll sell OK. I’ve sold a couple on there.

    I wouldn’t bother with carsales.

  • Sold a car a few years back on Carsales. $20,000 car, fairly new, presented very well. Had lots of great pics. Sold it within a week. I don't remember if there was a fee. Don't know how it work for a $5,000 car. If there is no hurry I would certainly give it a go. Be lucky to get $1,000 from a dealer.

  • What state are you in?
Some states you need a roadworthy check done each year for rego renewal.
You say the rego runs out in a week or so, and needs some repairs.
    Will it pass?
Might be best to drop it at the Auctions asap, and be content with whatever you get.

    • ? Some states you need a roadworthy check done each year for rego renewal.

      Really ?

      • +1

Yes, in NSW. It’s called a pink slip or Vehicle Safety Check and is for vehicles that are five years or older

  • Well, my experience only:
Put a paid advert on Carsales and a free one with Gumtree.
Car was sold with Gumtree ad.

Needless to say but the amount of time, effort and patience you invest with the sale will make it worth it at the end.
Of course not everyone has the stamina/skills to do it.
And you'll need to prepare all paperwork and certificates by yourself.

    Again, my experience only.
    Good luck!

    • Needless to say but the amount of time, effort and patience you invest with the sale will make it worth it at the end.

This is Important. It sucks when sellers have one dodgy photo and ‘msg for details’. It’s just wasting yours and their time to send a message or two and find our it’s manual when you want auto or the rego is expired or something that could be easily covered with a little effort.

Take photos from several angles (4 corners is good) in good light, overcast days are best. Park the car out in the open, not up next to a wall. Take photos of interior with doors open, take one of the dash with the ignition on to show kms.

Write a decent description outline any faults. Doesn’t have to be war and peace. be honest and to the point.

Have you looked on Redbook for a price guide ?

  • Helpful grammar/spelling Nazi here :)
It is "a used car" not "an used car"
The use of "a" or "an" is driven by pronunciation, not spelling. The "u" in "used" is acting more like a "y" and behaving like a consonant.
    Thank you for your attention.
