Importing Alcohol from The UK

Hi everyone,

Has anybody either been sent alcohol by a person in the UK or by a UK company and would there be big difference between the two options both by cost and ease of organisation/customs? I've been searching for Welsh beer in Australia ready for the Fifa World Cup in a couple of months but with very little luck.

So I've been thinking with the low cost of beer in Wales would it be anyway economical in ordering either online or getting a family/friend to send some? By the looks of a bit of research online I would be responsible for importing taxes of some sort but would think this shouldn't be astronomical from a couple cases of beer? A lot of the UK alcohol sites don't even offer international delivery which pushes me towards the friend and family idea.

I'm expecting it to be fairly expensive but Wales haven't made a world cup in 64 years so I may have a long wait until the next one…haha

I would just get your family to ship some over to you, shipping will totally suck (beer is heavy!) but it seems if the value is bellow $1000 you can just go ahead and import it

Beer seems to be around $20 a slab worth of tax depending on a bunch of things (https://www.ato.gov.au/business/excise-on-alcohol/lodging,-p…) So you could be up for a fair bit landed … but hey it has been 64 years and hopefully you get to enjoy it for the entirety of the World Cup ;)

They might whack you with GST on it too when it comes in (which is calculated on the cost of the beer + excise), which can add another big chunk of change on top.

Not sure how that works though, technically all alcohol gets gst+excise, but under $1k the seller should be charging GST. But if it's sent by family, I assume they pick it up on the way in instead.

  • I bought 3 bottles of whisky from UK back to 2020. frieght is about $50 AUD.
You will have to pay for the duty and tax (high chance) to get it cleared from customs.

I bought 6L of alcohol through the duty free line from the UK when the limit was 4L. My heart was pounding the whole time, I expected border patrol stormtroopers to kick me down at any moment.

    • I have seen someone bring a big dead unfrozen fish. Got caught ofcourse.

The shipping would be $400+ on 20kg
    Which beer is it ?
Maybe find a local Uk beer importer and ask about a bigger quantity.

Such a dumb price to pay for 300ml of beer.

  • International freight is too expensive these days.
Also you would have to pay alch tax + duty + gst on the lot.

  • No experience but I remember watching this £59 in duties for a bottle of gin from uk sending to friend in Australia.

I imagine if importing alcohol/cigarettes was affordable it would be common practice.
