  • That's a lot of switch games or FLAC files.

Us professionals use them for linux ISOs around here.

      • +4

I always carry my Linux isos on my phone.

        • My bloody laptop won't boot from SD card reader or else I'd buy this to distro hop without affecting my main distro, i.e. Zorin

@Rimas: What's everyone using storage for these days?

-I know TV Shows which are 20min short, 720p and h.264 compressed will run around 300MB per episode. Average that with 20 episodes, and you're looking at 6GB per season. With most shows going for 5 seasons, its about 30GB for the entire run. You can fit 25-30 old shows on 1TB.
-Netflix style shows are about 50min long, 1080p and newer h.265 compression will run around 200MB per episode. Average that with 10 episodes, that's 2GB per season. And with 3 seasons running, that's about 6GB for the entire show. You can fit 130-150 new shows on 1TB.

-Modern hollywood movies are usually 1.5 hours, 1080p and h.264 compressed to have around 3GB file size. That's about 300 modern movies on 1TB.
-The newer Hollywood Flix run slightly longer upto 3-hours, still 1080p now include HDR-1080p with the HEVC and they're about 1GB file size. Which is closer to 900 new movies on 1TB.
-Older movies will probably have worse compression, but they will have less data (540p DVD Quality) too. Filesizes are typically around 400MB, but lets scratch it up to half-gig for simplicity. It's closer to 1,600 dvd movies on 1TB.

-Photos taken vary wildly depending on the content of the shot, if the QuadBayer or Cropped, HEIF compression, and other settings. As a quick estimate let's say the modern smartphone camera produces 10MB sized shots on average. That's between 60k -to- 80k photographs on 1TB.
-Many people used to collect pictures from the internet (like memes), mostly in JPEG format on their PC. These were 0.1-1MB in size, but I'm just going to say 1MB here. That's around 500k -to- 700k pics on 1TB.

-Music, most New songs in AAC format are in the 5MB ballpark. We're talking one anywhere between 100k -to- 200k new songs on 1TB.
-Old songs in MP3 format songs are in the 1MB-6MB rage. As an average 3MB file size seems fine. That's between 200k -to- 300k old songs on 1TB.

edit: if anyone is interested about Retro Gaming, I can tell you how much storage each console requires from the 1D Atari, to 2D Nintendo, and upto the 3D PSP titles.

            • +1

              @Kangal: x265 FTW

              • +1

@whyisave: agreed.. 720p shows around 120MB, 1080p 50 minute shows around 500-700MB in size. Movies 1.3-2GB each. 1TB SD is good for retro gaming and would complete hold the US PS1 collection (CHD format) as well as almost every game ever release on every console from the Atari 2600, through to the PS1 (so pre-Gamecube). Includes every SEGA console, every NINTENDO console and handheld portable.

            • @Kangal: AAC is "new" and MP3 is old?

Judging by your filesize estimates, I'm glad you're not in charge of the high seas…

            • @Kangal:

Thanks so much. Now to wait for the Sony WM1AM2 to be restocked.

Out of spite for missing the 512GB microSD deal for AU$ 80+ ,
      I grabbed this 1TB card :-)

      Thank you, @mmcs

If you guys can wait until the next day, you can try officeworks price beat to get another 5% off that :-p

    • $299

      • Yeah, different seller. The $157 one is sold out

        • Lucky I just got 1😁. Was trying to price match with officeworks and they refused it.

  • +1

Any deals on SD cards? Need a new one for photography

    • +2

Just use an adaptor with this?

      • Oh my bad haha, I didn't realise it comes with one.

        • +6

If you do "hardcore" photography, you're going to have to move to a physically larger card. Like a Full-Sized SD Card with higher endurance, or even "CF Flash" cards that are made for specific cameras, and if you're a millionaire there's the thousands of dollars RED cards.

Just be weary about microSD cards, and writing on them quickly, in hot and humid conditions. You'll have warranty for free replacement from SanDisk in case of destruction, but their customer service sucks (good luck), and you'll lose all the footage you've had.

    • -1

Yes the deal you are commenting on. It comes with an adaptor

    • +1

You might want a faster card than this if you want to take photos rapidly or record in 4K.

    • If you're being paid you'll want a full size SD for additional peace of mind. The full size Evo plus 256gb is only $48

If it's a hobby than a micro sd with an adapter is fine. Just be wary of long sustained transfers that can cause excess heat generation.

  • +1

Damn, I should had purchased it from catch.

    • +1

      Ditto…
      $164 is a decent price still :'>

  • Would this work with the gopro hero 11 ?
I am a bit sceptical since the official guide says max size of 512gb.

    https://gopro.com/help/articles/block/microSD-Card-Considera…

    • I'm on the same boat with you

    • +2

The Hero 11 supports SDXC cards, which means Micro SD cards up to 2TB will function (when they get released next year).

You'll find the max listed as 512GB as that was likely the largest card available (and as such the largest tested) when the device came out.

  • Thanks OP, i got one from catch

  • Sub 100 waiting room

  • +13

I am just mind blown theres 1TB micro SD cards now.

    • remember when we all drooled over 1GB cards?

    • Imagine losing something the size of your finger-nail,
      containing 1TB of …

    • To blow your mind further, there's working prototypes of 2TB Micro SD cards, which are slated to be released sometime next year!

  • Are these any good for Steam Deck?

Also, this price is good, what's the "Catch"?

    • +4

The "catch" is that AUD $150 price bracket has been long overdue. With the removal of microSD slots from most phones, there's less competition. With the pandemic and chip shortage, they've have been expensive for a while.

The past six months, there's been a "chip excess" and flash prices from manufacturers have been crashing. DDR4, DDR5, SSD, and nVme have all had great deals lately. It's now the turn for microSD cards. I picked up a Samsung PRO 512GB microSD card several months ago for $80, it lives inside the RP2+.

I just hope a new standard comes, and things improve further. We should see their speeds getting closer to mobile phones (UFS 3), with 1TB microSD card going for AUD $100 should be the norm in this post-2020 era. Heck, I think this should have already displaced BluRay Discs with these a decade ago.

      • +3

Not complaining. I think this is the cheapest I've seen the Extreme 1TB. I took the bait and ordered one for my Steam Deck. I wouldn't mind one for my Switch as well, but I'll wait.

      • Didn't they try to sell movies on SD cards a few years ago? I am sure I saw them in BigW, or am I mistaken?

        • Would've made sense in the mid-00s, between the time of the PSP and PS3. But I've never seen anything of it.

  • +8

This card holds the same amount of data as 754000 3.5" floppy disks.

If laid end to end those floppy disks would be 6786 kms long. Equivalent to the combined length, and width of Australia (approximately).

This is the size of a fingernail.

    • That's about the same distance as driving from Somerset,QLD (tip of straya) and driving down and hitting every major city (Cairns, Townsville, Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth). Doing so will hit 90% of the population of Straya.

Sorry to the cities of Darwin, Alice Springs, and Hobart.

    • +2

What if you laid the floppys diagonally, from corner to corner

  • this would be a decent cheaper alternative to the jetdrive lite to boost up additional storage drive for macbooks with sd card slots (though not as pretty as jetdrive lite since part of it would still stick out, but much cheaper

  • It's showing up as $389 for me, on the Westfield Direct site.

  • What do you use this for?

    • +1

What wouldn't you use it for? Cameras, drones, mobile phones, handheld consoles, dash cams, streaming capture, backups.

    • +2

You can store files on it, like a hard drive.

  • I'd like to expand the storage on my laptop, which has an inbuilt microsd card reader. Is there any disadvantage to using one of these as a hard drive in a windows laptop?

    • +2

      1, it's slow in write speed; 2, it has a shorter lifespan;
You can use this for extra file storage but better not to put an operating system on it.

      • Thankyou, that's exactly what I needed to know.

  • +2

eBay is now $151.20 after coupon "DIGISPRT" https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/403209550001

  • Boo, my ebay order for cancelled due to OOS!

  • What a crap first experience with Westfield Direct

They accepted my order, took my money, said stock was confirmed…. Happy as Larry.

TODAY email comes thru saying refund is in progress, they don't have any stock, and it'll take up to 10 days to get my money back.

    WTF.

    • Mine was shipped today. I did order really early though (probably within 10 minutes of it being posted on ozbargain).

  • Should have ordered 2 of these. Can't see any for a price anywhere near this at the moment and I could do with another one
