USB Dock Logistics - solution required

Hi all,

Have googled but not having much luck. I currently have a desktop pc (using Radeon Rx580 card) along with usb mouse/keyboard into PC. Two monitors connected to PC via HDMI.

Monitor one inputs - HDMI and VGA
Monitor two inputs - HDMI and Display port.

With work, we have just been given Macbook Airs (m2) to use. Ideally id like the best solution whereby if I come home from work, I can plug in my Macbook in and use the normal PC keyboard/mouse and monitors then when wife WFH is able to just use desktop etc. I like my mechanical keyboard and dislike having to work exclusively from a laptop/laptop keyboard.

Does such USB dock exist or is anyone able to suggest other solutions to explore

  • Remote desktop instead? (there's a few guides online)

  • M2 air only supports 1 external display natively. If you're happy with that, the most elegant solution is to get a USB-C display with in-built hub into which are plugged your mouse and keyboard. One cable then supplies power, peripherals, and video. The second-best solution is to buy a cheap USB-C to DP or HDMI hub with an additional USB-A port or two for your peripherals and optionally a USB-C port for pass-through charging (or use the other USB-C port or Magsafe port on the laptop to charge).

If you still want 2 displays, look into getting a DisplayLink hub. You'll need to research to ensure it's compatible, but that may allow 2 external displays.

    • Ah that’s not something I had thought of with the m2. Other option I’m considering is just upgrading to one ultrawide monitor instead.

      • Yep! Just get an ultrawide with built in dock. Dell U3821DW for example
