Didnt even know usb 4.0 was a thing

    • +2

First version came about in 2019. As with all things it takes a while for everything to catch up. At least now USB-IF are renaming their speeds to this since the names before were confusing.

Like USB 3.0 has gone through several names changes. USB 3.1 Gen 1, USB 3.1, USB 3.1 Gen 2, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB 3.2 Gen 2x2.

  • Can current USB C sockets utilise the USB 4 speed or get stuck with USB 3 speed?

    • +6

That depends on your device. If the device supports USB 4.0 then it'll achieve USB 4.0 speeds. If not then it'll achieve USB 3 or whatever standard it does support.

      • Device as in a PC or Mac or laptop? If so, then yes.

If device refers to a Thunderbolt 3 / 4 SSD enclosure disguise as USB 4 (or being sold as USB 4 enclosure), then no.

Your current USB-C 3.2 socket will NOT benefit from this cable nor increase speed if you were to plug in a USB 4 device to it.

If the device is Thunderbolt 3 or 4 (i.e. Thunderbolt 3 SSD), you CANNOT even use it on existing USB-C 3.2 gen 2, 3.2 gen 1 or 3.2 gen 2x2. That thunderbolt 3 enclosure will NOT fallback to USB 3.2 mode.

A Thunderbolt 3/4 port DOES support USB 3.2 gen 2 devices, but the other way around does not work.

  • Buyers beware. AliExpess's delivery speed equates to what seems like a lifetime of waiting. You've been warned. Enter at your own risk.

AliExpress is a marketplace so that comes down to the seller and shipping method used. In the past 2 months most of my orders have arrived within 2 weeks with a few taking 3-4 weeks. They've certainly improved as COVID delays have gone.

      • AliExpress is a marketplace down to the seller and shipping method used

As a marketplace Aliexpress should set simple, run-of-the-mill standards such as efficiency and speedy
of deliveries for sellers that can and must adhere to. Waiting for 3-4 weeks is unfortunately expected, 8 and longer borders on lunacy as playing the waiting game is never a pleasurable experience and sometimes deliveries don't even see the light of day. They just simply disappear into the ether.

That is why I hardly go the (Ali)Expess way unless there is no other means to obtain items anywhere else. IMO Amazon market place is the gold standard that all market places should follow, though YMMV on that too.

AliExpress have something called "AliExpress Standard Shipping" to make delivery faster and less likely to be lost. Basically sellers will ship your order to one of Alibaba's many distribution hubs where "AI" is used to determine the best shipping method to deliver your order. If you've made a lot of small orders together they'll be bundled up into one bag and if you have larger orders they're more likely to have faster shipping.

Other sellers may opt to use Alibaba's Cainiao logistics for shipping on small packages as it has tracking and that's a minimum requirement by AliExpress for sellers. This shipping method is a lottery. Sometimes it's fast and sometimes it's slow.

The other issue is that some sellers will still use Singapore Post and China Post. These are the ones that will take forever.

  • Does the coupon code work for multiple orders? Or can be used for 1 order only?

    • Coupon is one per account sadly. Discounts US$4.30 from US$10.00.

      • Thanks, that helps. I will choose wisely which length to purchase. Don't really like having multiple accounts :)

I was able to purchase 3 cables in separate orders, all with US$4.30 discounted per order. Was automatically applied when I checked out.

  • Hmmm can't seem to get the code to work. Says it's not recognised…

    • Try 3XVYKW1758Y8 instead.

      • Thanks! That one worked
