Upgrading from OnePlus 6 - Options

Hello Ozbargainers,

I am currently using a OnePlus 6, approaching 4 years so I believe it's time to retire the dinosaur.

Looking for some advice on getting a new phone:

  • 3.5mm headphone jack (I know… I like the earphones)
  • Good battery life
  • Some light gaming, nothing crazy/intense
  • Don't care too much about cameras (use the wife, she's got an iPhone)
  • Ideally no bloatware and clean OS
  • Hopefully around the $600-$700 mark

I was looking at the Pixel 7 and ordered it, but realised it doesn't have a 3.5mm headphone jack so I may cancel it.

Appreciate any help, thanks in advance!

Update: Went with the Samsung A52s 5G (Aus Warranty) - $493 on eBay

I guess the Dinosaurs ended it when they couldn't adapt to wireless earbuds.

Many phones have dropped the 3.5mm unfortunately - consider buying a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter or two to use instead - lets you go with whatever phone then

Keep the Pixel 7 and do yourself a favor and buy yourself a pair of cheap Bluetooth earbuds like Soundpeats or Taotronics that often go on special here. You wont use wired earphones again. Knotty shit things they are.

    • I got the Anker P2s, just haven't used them as much as I'd like.

I guess it is time to make the switch.

    Well… you've already ordered the Pixel 7.
Otherwise the next recommendation would be a Samsung A52-s, ASUS Zenfone 8, Zenfone 9, RoG 6 Pro which can all be found with local warranty. If you don't care about warranty, there's the grey market (import models). The best is the Sony 1 mk IV and Sony 5 mk IV, but I'm sure there's some Chinese devices that might be a fit for you.

Last option is probably the Samsung S10+. It still has official software support, it's still decently fast and lasts long, and you'll notice the huge camera performance upgrade from the OnePlus. It lacks 5G and 120Hz screen, and it's pretty old. The good news is that it's cheap, and pairs well with the Razer JungleCat if you're into PS2 games on the go.

    • Thanks Kangal, went with the Samsung A52S 5G. Seems like good value and has headphone jack haha

Nicely done. You get 3 2-Years of software (full-platform) updates on it officially through Samsung, and another extra 2-Years of security updates. So you're mostly covered until 2025.

By that time, there should be a good reason to upgrade devices to a new one. Almost like an iPhone, it just works, and lasts a decent time.

  • Where did you find pixel 7 for 600-700? I'm in the same situation as you as my OnePlus 6 feels like it's breaking down

    • @edumacation, I didn't find a Pixel 7 for $600-$700, but pretty close with the current deal that Google has.

      Pixel 7 - $999
10% off from UNiDAYS or StudentBeans = $899
$250 Google Store Credit (sell it for $200) = $699

My OnePlus 6 is really coming to a crawl, it lags out of no where.
