State of GPU Prices in 2022

Spent the last 2 years not surrounding myself with hopelessness by looking at GPU prices. Just wondering if the prices went back to pre 2020 rates now or if I have to wait a while more.

  • Prices might go down a little, but they wont go back to 2020 prices, why would retailers and manufacturers lower their prices when they are selling out currently.

Prices will never be pre 2020 (inflation and recession looming) :/

AMD GPUs are good value at the moment as are some secondhand ex mining cards …

Prices were good/normal (2016) with GTX-10 series, and AMD fulfilling most of the low-end and crypto buyers. Basically RRP was somewhat competitive, while market prices were always below RRP, and usually by a lot.

With (2018) the shift to RTX-20 series and Vega 7, RRP prices went up slightly BUT you were getting slightly more performance (same FPS per $). However that's going by RRP, the market prices weren't as great. They were casually below RRP, but not by much.

With (2019) RDNA-1 and Nvidia's reaction with RTX-20-Super, we saw this bounce back a little. So that now you were getting more bang for buck, going by RRP. Market prices were usually below RRP, and by a bit.

With (2020) RDNA-2 and RTX-30 we saw things recover a lot, again going by RRP. Market prices were always above RRP, and by a lot. Since neither company had enough cards early to meet demand. The scalpers went into full-swing. Then the pandemic happened and it affected things. Then the crypto-boom. Then it was the chip shortage. Then it was inflation. So a chain of events ruined prices basically for over 2-Years.

With (2022) the crypto-boom ended, there was excess inventory. The RRP never changed, but in reality the market prices were changing, withthe 2020 cards finally crashing in price. So they now casually hitting below RRP and by a bit.

With (2023) RDNA-3 and RTX-40 cards are releasing. Nvidia started first by increasing their prices equal or inline with inflation. So that the price-to-performance is equal to the that of the RTX-30 series, when going by RRP. We don't know, but it's expected that AMD will do something similar but perhaps slightly more lenient, making the RX-7 cards better than RX-6 cards when using RRP/Inflation. Market prices are an unknown yet, we will find out in the coming months, but so far it is looking hopeful.

    …what's the takeaway?
-If you have a Midrange RTX-20 card or older card, it's starting to "become slow". You should be upgrading (0 months) as almost anything out there now will give you an acceptable upgrade in terms of value.
-If you have a Highend RDNA-1 card wait a little, it "will hold out" a bit longer. You should upgrade when the Market Prices hit a better value (3-6 months) due to having well-stocked RDNA-3 cards, ie competition.
-If you have a High-end RTX-30 or Midrange RDNA-2 card, your system "is still fast". You shouldn't upgrade until (12-months) this new-gen establishes itself and we see steep discounts on the top-end cards.

Another newbie who cannot use google to lookup and wants other people to do the work..

  • Used RTX 3070 bargain now on ebay

Think 40X0 will be a rip off

  • Can I get advice on whether or not to buy second hand gpus? Quite a few on ebay for decent prices (around $100-$200 cheaper than brand new) for rtx 3060/ti's.
