Is Watching or Selling IPTV Illegal?

Hi Guys,

New poster here. Stumbled upon OzBargain lately through a friend.

Just wondering if using IPTV is legal or not in Australia?

There's a guy in one of my Whatsapp groups offering Sri Lankan IPTV for $250 a year with the payment through Paypal.
Is it legal to use it in here or will I get in trouble if I watch it after purchasing from him. I think he gets it from some sources but not sure if its legal or not as he sells it privately.

Would he get in trouble if he got caught since he's also selling movies as well.

Thanks you.

  • It's a grey area tbh.
You won't get in trouble for doing it but it's ethically a bit shady.

$250 for a year is a rip off though. Fairly easy to find cheaper alternatives.

      Laughs in my pirate ship

      • Don't get me wrong, I enjoy captaining my own ship but you're not going to get a good IPTV service that OP wants for free.

The only thing I (personally) would pay IPTV for is PPV and other live sports you can't find elsewhere.

IPTV as a concept is legal if it's provided direct by license holders.

The resellers may not be as it's akin to pirated content. $250 is far too much, that's an absolute rip-off.

search "m3u files" something like github will have something. all you need is a file like https://iptv-org.xxxxxxx.xxxx/index.nsfw.m3u paste that into VLC player/ open network stream. Then go to in vlc view/playlist and you could have 10 or 15K channels to scroll through depending on who posted it.
Only problem is no tv guide your just flicking through blind.
I'd rather use Plex Tubi Freevee because you can see the guides

For $250 a year you could get every channel and show/movie for streaming.

    • Could you? Most are about $10/month, so $250 would only get you 2 services

      • Sure, if you did it the legal way.

        • If you count piracy couldn't you do it for free, and put them on a private streaming server for yourself?

@Quantumcat: That's not really very convenient though. Unless you don't value your own time and mental energy.

            • @AustriaBargain: I don't really understand what your comment meant. If it is legal and convenient it is going to cost way more than $250 and if illegal it will cost nothing?

@Quantumcat: I think I see what you're missing now. These days there are such servers, that are full of every movie, every TV show, and every major live streaming television channel in the world. Except instead of making such a server yourself, you just pay a small monthly fee to access it, and the server is fast enough to serve you all the content in 4K, though the live TV is variable resolution.

  • $250 a year?

Check out AliExpress. Will get the same for about $30/year. Can be a bit tricky to search and find though.

  • really interested in getting an IPTV.. does anyone know if it works with chromecast Google TV? apparently the fire stick is the best tool for it

  • $250 someone is making very good money, if anyone is stupid enough to pay that good luck
