Split Aircon for around $2000 (preferably 8.00kw cooling or more)

do you guys know of any deals going around or recommend any good brand of split aircon with preferably 8KW cooling or more? i know fujitsu had some good cash back offer few months ago. is it worth buying something now or wait till summer?

i've got around $2500 good guys gifts to use.

  • My understanding is that the product prices don't change much, just that the manufacturers give incentives like cash back over winter.

  • Definitely worth starting to look around now

8kW for a Split System though?
Sounds more like the capacity for a ducted system, unless you're looking at a twin condenser setup.

I'd seriously consider whether you actually NEED 8kW, it's going to cost a bomb to run!

    • thanks scubacoles!
the reason i stated 8KW is because its for big open plan living space (around 50sqm) that includes lounge, dinning, kitchen and rumpus. Also cannot get the ducted system as its a 2 storey house and need it for downstairs. when i initially consulted a cooling company i was told that split is only my option.

      • +1

Double check your calculations… I reckon a 4kW would be plenty for that sort of size.
(although it's been awhile since I specced up my place)

      • You would be FAR better off getting 2 x 4kW than one 8kW, since then you won't have a massive freezing cold gust blowing from one position to try and cool the entire space. You'll never make it equally cool with just one unit in an area that size.

The other advantage of 2 systems is that in the mid-seasons you can just run one if required, because a very large system will have trouble modulating at low loadings. An inverter will be much better than a standard unit of course, but even then there will be a minimum cooling level that the machine just simply won't be able to go any lower.

For the record, we have a 50m² space in Sydney that needs 7kW + a small auxillary A/C at the far end. It all depends on the amount of windows, doors, inulation, aspect, etc etc. Ours has a 10m width of glass doors that face North West, and the heat pours in through there.

        • thanks llama…..good suggestion…….will see if that makes it economical in terms of overall cost (unit plus installation for 2 systems and possible switchboard upgrade as i feel i don't have any spares left).

probably a silly question what do you mean by inverter? isn't split system the only option here? is inverter any different? also i don't need heating function whatsoever as i have got ducted…..do they have/sell cooling systems only?

        • Inverter and Reverse Cycle (heating) are both options. Inverter means that it can run slowly rather than full speed/noise and turning on/off all the time.

These days it is very hard to get a unit without either feature, so you don't pay more for them.

  • you're in melbourne so get an evaporative cooler.

cold air sinks, so you just have it venting upstairs and it drifts down to the bottom floor.
