Upgrading Surface Laptop 3 SSD

I have the SL3 with 128GB. Installed all stuff, I have about 35GB free. It seems fine, but if I use it and save stuff, when it get to about 10GB free it slows to a crawl. No idea why.

So like if I go out take photos, I can easily fill 10-20GB.

Saw you can user upgrade to any M.2 2230 SSD. People were excited back then for $100ish. But I see these are now $350+ for 512gb. Eugh!

Is it worth doing such for an older laptop?
Or keep as a kids laptop?

  • Have you tried Disk Cleanup to clear system files from windows update in C drive properties?

What do you install that takes so much space?

    • 128GB, Win10 takes 45GB.

      • My old tablet says 18GB after disk cleanup.

  • It is only 2-3 years old. Am surprised only 128GB. Definitely worth upgrading, as you can get 256GB 2230 cheaply. (see Amazon).
Alternatively, upgrade the OS to Linux. It is well supported on Surface.

    How much RAM?

better than $300, but not sure about only adding 128gb.

It was the base model, 8gb ram.
Not great I think, but fine for office stuff.
Overheats and fan goes crazy when doing zoom

      You can't add ram right?

      • Doubling the SSD will be a huge improvement, saving you effort from fighting Windows bloat.

RAM is not upgradable, but as you say, fine for office stuff.
