Lenovo Flex 5 (360 Degree) Hinge of Death and Returning It 22 Months after Purchase (My Story and Something That May Help You)

Hey everyone,

I noticed people have been increasing complaining about the hinges on these devices and we know many have been refused Australian warranty. I have read that people have also stated that Amazon refused to accept their return. Anyways, tonight I got the shits and contacted Amazon and explained the follow points, which they authorised a return / refund 22 months on.

1) I stated that the advert stated a 1-year warranty, to which Lenovo Australia refuses tom honour Amazon sold laptops for warranty, even if an extension is purchased (which you can do outside warranty, which is nice, but useless)
2) I stated it had been having issues within months of getting it and I didn't want to go through the extremely difficult global return process (this is a pain in rural areas) and that I didn't understand my rights.
3) I explained I had to purchase a laptop to replace this
4) I stated I had contacted fair trading NSW, to which I told amazon they informed me that it doesn't matter what time frame a manufacturer sets as the warranty, a laptop is at least 2 years. I also stated they were keen to review my case.
5) I stated its a known design flaw with the hinges (I believe this is what tip it in my favour and he stated he already knows).

If all else fails, just be a respect Karen and ask for a manager to call you back or try another agent. I suggest ringing them, as they are psychology under more pressure than via chat (it's like when you want to find info on a used car, you ring them and never text them. People find it harder to palm people off when in direct contact).

I dealt with this via the phone and was approved for a return in around 20 min. I believe calling around 11pm, I got the US (Indian-based) call centre as he kept saying Y'all and God bless.

For those that were refused a return in the past, you may wish to call again. You could also mention that the item was different than the photos as in some photos you can see the 15" model with the number pad. I am responsible for the return to the USA, but they will compensate me for the postage costs (This might be different in a city area with Parcel Point). I hope this can help someone that is at breaking point. I'm just glad to be done with this fault laptop. I still love it and would have kept it, but those hinges made it junk.

Note: refund can take up to 30 days to be processed

  • 6) I stated I would never shop at amazon again if it wasn't resolved.

This makes the red phone in Bezo's office go nuts. This is what really helped the most for sure.

I should have expressed that I had another issue a week or so back, which is where that comment came from. I will try to remove it as it may not apply to others.
