  • Seems like the best price yet.
Tempting if I can sell my xm4 for about $300. Don't expect them to be much better really but bit lighter would be ok.

    • +7

i own the xm4 as well, from what ive seen in xm4 vs xm5 reviews, its a waste of money spending the extra to upgrade to the xm5 unless you purely want to have the latest version and the aesthetic of it. Its more understandable if you have like the xm3 or something

      • +2

Yeah mate I assumed they are almost the same and not worth an extra $200.

Perhaps just look a bit slimmer (the headband). They also don't fold up as such.

        The xm4 are pretty good.

        Cheers

      • Why is that with every product, we got owners of the previous version telling us that there's no need to upgrade?
        Self assurance?

        • -1

I bought the xm4s (two actually) after the xm5 came out, after trying them both on. XM5s just aren’t worth it imo. No point having that much noise cancelling if they aren’t portable enough to bring them anywhere (airplanes for example) in a small case.

        • -3

I have a pair of XM4's, and I can say that the repair people will have an easier time of replacing the feedback microphones when they fail. (They're all ribbon cables on the XM5 now. Before they were soldered leads.)

ANC gets really dangerous when they fail. Likely to cause hearing damage dangerous.

So anyway, my ears are bleeding.

        • Not really. I have seen various posts. Some owners have suggested upgarding because they want the latest and greatest. Maybe just you paying more attention to only those owners telling us no need to upgrade.

        • Do you upgrade every phone model?

          • @G-rig: No, but i dont run around announcing that i'm not buying the new model because 'its not worth it'

            • @nikoris: Fair enough, but in this case it isn't though.
These type of products are almost on the tech side of audio quality, not flat out sound quality (which they'd be very similar as well).

Good you still added your 2c anyway lol.

            • +1

@nikoris: i dont get your comments, I didn't bang my head and just say "its not worth it". I live in the tech space as i work in the hollywood film industry, and i consider myself to be some what of an audiophile. But being an audiophile doesnt mean i upgrade whatever earphones/headphones (or even CPUs/GPUs as a PC enthusist) every single generation regardless of the technological improvements or price-points. Nobody said the xm5 is the same as xm4… nor did i say 'all sony did was change the design of it and slap on a new price tag'. It does have improvements, but those improvements arent anywhere close to the cost difference between the 2 models if you paid MSRP (or close to it) of the xm4. IF you own an older generation such as XM3s or equivilent and wish to upgrade, it would make more sense. If you wish to also save a buck, now that XM5s are released, XM4s are cheaper and it may be a better option for you.

The are an improvement on an already good headphone, not redesigned from the ground up. Less rugged and don't fold, but perhaps a bit lighter/slimmer headband.

  • Thanks. Good price

This day is finally here!! Definitely the best price by far! Thanks heaps!

  • I have been desperately looking for a good deal of headphones before seeing this post. Thanks heaps OP!

If you have access to good guys commericial you can ask for a quote and get it for cheap. I got mine for $389

    • how exactly?

    • How long did yours take to be delivered or did you pick up from a local store? They just told me it’s not in stock and there’s no ETA available but I’ve decided to wait anyway

    • Thanks for this. I asked GGC for a quote and it was $389. I then decided to try my luck calling the good guys for a price match. The guy was very helpful and he found a silver in stock near me even though the website said out of stock when I checked. He sent me a link to pay and I purchased with gift cards and will pick up tomorrow.

      • Can you ask for a deal at a normal Goodguys for that price? Can't see on the normal website.
        Cheers

        • +1

The way I did it was call the number on the normal Good Guys page (pay less by phone at top of page). Quoted the commercial price (without providing any evidence) and the guy proceeded with it. It's worth a try if you don't have access to the commercial page or want to pay with gift cards. You can pay with up to 2 gift cards and a debit/credit card.
The model numbers are WH1000XM5B and WH1000XM5S (b for black and s for silver)

          • @dubcmj: Thanks for the info, tempted to give it a go mate.

    OOS

  • I got mine late June for around $360.
This was my first proper headphone, so not much to compare with. However, I went to JB for sound test and feel XM4 has a better bass but XM5 has a more true feel to the song quality.
The design, comfort and extra mics had won me over.

    • I prefer a bit more natural sound more than too much bass. Call quality could be better not that I've tested much.

Not good value upgrading the xm4 for xm5 still though I feel, but probably good time to sell the xm4 if I could get the xm5 very cheap.

Wonder if JB commercial do them cheaper.

    • Where for $360?

      • I'm also wondering this!

        • Its closer to $320 since I was able to claim the TRS GST in July.
          More details here

          • @kc7: So where for 360$?
I call bs, probably had after using a gift voucher.
Will ask my JB hi-fi commercial rep.

            • @G-rig: Have you tried to click the link where I have explained in detail how I got it for $360?
Would be nice to read the comment first before 'calling bs'.
TheGoodGuys plus got store credit, which I sold.

              • @kc7: Didn't see the link, Cheers
Either way store credit isn't a reduced price of the item in which others can buy it for (at least that combo of hacks isn't very common)

                • -1

@G-rig: The store credit was given as part of the promo by TGG (use PayPal over $500+ get $120 credit, mentioned in that link). It was available to anyone, and I just stated what it cost me. Just like TRS claim reduced the price for me, but the original purchase was always $550.

                  • -2

@kc7: Well done. Just saying you could have used that gift voucher on anything so it's not really relevant.

Anyway good they are coming down in price as they are just minor improvements on the Xm4.

            • +1

@G-rig: TGGC had it for $380 last time I asked (Sept I believe).

              • @Stefce: $380 would be alright if i could sell the XM4 for 280-300$

              • @Stefce: I asked my contact at JB hi-fi commercial yesterday for a quote.

Unfortunately, because these are 'under stock constraint' the price was pretty bad ($517 plus $10 delivery).

Will park this idea until they are at reduced by about $100, considering they are only about 15% better than the xm4.

                • @G-rig: Can you use gift cards on JB commercial?

                  • @Stefce: Not sure hey
Not a good enough price anyway so would want to use 28 degrees and do a Price protection claim

          • +1

            @kc7: A true ozbargainer!

  • How do these feel after some time on your head, and ears? I feel my XM3s hurt my ears after an hour or so, maybe due to the pressure of it sitting on my head?

    • I use them for at least 2-3 hours every time without feeling the need to 'rest'.

      • Don't you get hot wearing them for such a long time? I can't stand my XM4 after 1 hour. Much worse in summer.

        • AC office/home/plane/bus fine
Woudln't wear them to the gym or out in the sun..

        • No not at all. Although, I’ve only ever used them in my study, cafe and on flights/airport. Haven’t really tested for summers yet.

  • +2

I got a quote from the good guys commerical yesterday for $389

  • Just having a look on ebay, someone sold some XM4 for $320 pp yesterday, and they go for about $280-310 before that. May not be bad to sell and price protect some new ones once a good deal comes up. The new ones are technically better but feel cheaper, just an idea.

  • FWIW got the XM5 from TGG $405 (plus $10 shipping from Melb, none available in the stores locally).
Very good price, JB's wouldn't budge much (about $100 more) if anyone was after some - just called up and quoted the commercial price above ~$389.

Sold the XM4 for $30 less than I paid ($270) but were like new in box.
