Will Officeworks Accept Return of Open but Unused AirPods?

I recently purchased AirPods from Officeworks. I opened the plastic seal, ripped the plastic off the charging cables, charged the case, connected it to my phone, then forgot about it. I realised I don't actually need them. They are open, but unused.

Will Officeworks accept this as part of their return policy? Or is it as good as used because there is no way to tell if they've been used or not?

For Change of mind returns, one of the key points in their policy is the item has to be in re-saleable condition, including its original packaging (if any), is unused and as sold.

    • Yeah thats my question. I opened the airtight clear plastic seal, does that count as used? I ripped the plastic holders keeping the charging cable in its shape, does that count as used? Will they believe me if I say its unused?

Opened will be considered used especially for in-ear headphones. OP would you buy a pair of headphones if they had signs of use?

Will they believe me if I say its unused?

        I wouldn’t believe you.

        • Thats fine. I even acknowledged that could be a possibility in my Original Post.

      • If you REALLY have

opened the airtight clear plastic seal, does that count as used? I ripped the plastic holders keeping the charging cable in its shape(images.techhive.com)

then why not upload your own photo rather than using a link to a photo from an online article?

        • Im saying I ripped the plastic holders off, so obviously I've already thrown them away. Did you just want me to upload a picture of my charging cable without the plastic?

The picture was to show what plastic holders I was talking about to add context.

Why is it so obvious? You never mentioned that you threw away any product packaging in your post or in any of your multiple replies.

What are you wanting here - another OzB member who made a similar purchase, regretted their purchase but only after breaking the seal and throwing away some of the internal packaging, to tell you that OW accepted a return for a full refund? How would this assist you in your case?

How about returning the purchase to the OW store yourself & then regaling us with a post about what happened?

Unlikely. Try it, but don't expect them to do it.

You can always sell it on marketplace / gumtree etc. if / when they deny your request

No. Next time buy from apple as their return policy includes 14days change of mind

I recently returned some Sony ear buds to Officeworks as they had an intermittent problem, one side would just randomly disconnect at times. They didn't ask any questions or even open the box, just asked if I wanted a replacement or money back
    You could try that

Apple honours such returns too but i would personally feel weird sharing that information with other people, especially when Op’s AirPods are perfectly fine.

Just passing on my experience with returning a product that was genuinely faulty and Officeworks not seeming to have any interest in verifying….

It's not like Apple haven't been ripping off their disciples for years

        • It's not like Apple haven't been ripping off their disciples for years

They have and I personally hate their profit margins too… but buying an Apple is predicated on free will. They never forced us to buy their products.
RayCon Earbuds and some Android phones are also great and more reasonably priced but we never go for them.

The only way Apple gets away with charging us that much ? Because we are the ones paying for it.
So it’s hypocritical now to complain about them ripping us off.
What you have is a Tit for Tat mentality, devoid of any personal accountability. As a man I can’t ever subscribe to such ideas.

                      I don’t know, didn’t you mention me under a post that I wasn’t even a part of ?
                      Had me totally confused.
                      I can’t find it anymore though…

    • Apple is way more A#&L about returns, I used to work at JB and we had a Seperate portal just for apple returns and if the fault didn't match what we put in the report then JB wouldn't be reimbursed for those products and as a consequence, written off.

    Did you ask officeworks?

    • +3

      That would be counter intuitive.

    • the comment is supposed to be 'What did Officeworks say when you asked them?'

Get outta here with your logic

  • if only we were like the US and Europe - try it and if you don't like it return for a refund

  • no

  • I'm going to go against the grain and say maybe?
I bought a pair of in-ear earphones from a big chain store and they were terribly uncomfortable. I said they were not fit for purpose and the manager OK'd the return under good will. I only got store credit though which wasn't an issue for me

Soak in water for 1 hour, remove, dry, return for refund assuming they do not work.

    • +1

      Nah… washing machine.

Not that it'd work. They are incredibly water resistant devices.

      Then drier.

Only the drier could wreck them (heat)

      But probably won't

Seriously… investing $300+ in Airpods and having a change of mind?
This is why retailers remove their change of mind policy.
They're under no obligation once its open i feel, sell it on gumtree/marketplace, at least its apple and won't depreciate heavily.

    • No need, no purpose. Not fit for the purpose I bought them for! (I didn't have one!)

Oh the twisted logic a cashed-up OzBargainer risks having to deal with.

    • $300+ in Airpods and having a change of mind?

Why is that so hard to believe? Is there some magical threshold at which it's impossible to have a change of mind or respond to a change in personal circumstances?

We purchased a second car about four months ago thinking we'd we'd it having moved to a smaller city with far less public transport infrastructure and still needing to regularly commute. That car now has 203km on the odometer… 2km of which was pre-delivery. We're still working through the dealer-supplier first tank of fuel.

At just over 12km of use per week, I'd love to be able to return it for a refund. It's not a fancy ride (we nicknamed it 'The Shopping Trolley') but it definitely cost more than a pair of Airpods.

      • This is the definition of buyers remorse
        Its not an entitlement

If you buy something valuable enough to regret it you better have researched it enough to live with the decision.
        Similar vein to houses.
Cant return one of those once bought

        • I genuinely have no sense of what you're trying to say. Entitlement‽

I thought we are^ discussing the return of an unwanted product to a store that has a change of mind policy.

I was highlighting that people buy emotionally and justify rationally. Once the feelings have played-through there are people who will then realise they didn't actually want/need the product. It can be a <$10 or $10,000+ item.

Some stores have change of mind return policies/procedures to remove one of the logical barriers (consequence) to purchase commitment.

Good luck OP. I think you might be sh1t out of luck given the nature of the product. I reckon you'd be testing the goodwill of even the most consumer-oriented store manager. That said, the amount of bargain bin crap marked as 'Customer Return Unwanted/Unsuitable' at my local Officeworks stores suggest they might be more flexible than I give them credit for.

^ were …I'm tapping out of this thread.

They were $185. But also, so what? I bought something, and changed my mind and am just wondering if they will accept returns.

Nowhere did I say Im entitled to it. If they say no, thats fine. I'll sell somewhere else, or just give them away.
