Working at Bubble Tea Store

Hi, I'm looking for a job right now. I'm interested in working at bubble tea store like Gong cha, sharetea, or chatime, but I'm afraid that the wage is too low than minimum wage. I was wondering how much they will pay for an hour.
Appreciate your input.

Before worrying about the wage, get the job.

What else would you be doing if you were not working?

Not wasting time on a job that pays below minimum wage?

    • Hi, I do have a job as a casual worker. I'm just looking for a second job to fill up my time cuz I have free time from 8am to 2pm. It seems to me that bubble tea stores tend to hire casual employee.

Also depends on your age and if you're 'officially' getting paid (or just getting paid under the table; cash-in-hand).

If you are officially getting paid, then you should be paid at least the minimum wage.

    • RichardL Thanks

No name shop will likely be cash in hand and paid below any award.

Gong Cha does follow the award from what I've seen of their recruitment. Whether subsequent hires after by the managers follow that, I'm not sure.

Chatime, based on the franchisee - they've been caught the most with underpayments.

Have you considered getting a good job that gets good money?

      Joe Hockey, is that you?

Probably the worst kind of business to work for TBH.

i have a relo working at cha time. looks like he is getting paid according to award.
    ymmv according to franchise.

Presumably once a competitor is under the spotlight all of the others will also look to ensure they are meeting the legal requirements.

    • Thanks

  • Yummy. Need to get some later.

    • Sure go ahead.

It all depends on whether you will sneak us some free Gong Cha or not.

If you are over 18 I'd suggest to go and find a call centre customer service job. Don't have people in your face, if they get rude you can always terminate the call. Pay is higher than minimum wage. Usually EBA is pretty generous.

    • NRMA hires a whole bunch of call centre staff a couple of times a year, WFH if I remember correctly, and one of the best perks is half-price on all your policies.

Best to work there if you are asian.

    • Nut sure why you're getting downvoted. It's kinda obvious bubble tea shops hire a particular demographic and it's not older white males.

      • Or they are generally simply family businesses staffed by multiple family members who crazily enough, from being related, share the same ethnicity?

Downvoters prefers barrage of abuse againts female asian who works at bubble tea shops.

Your comment doesn't even make sense but you just couldn't wait to link the vid

    • I was gonna write this myself.

I can only recall once where I've seen a white or Indian person work at a bubble tea store. And despite that, both of them were young females anyway.

Even in a place like Brisbane, far less diverse than Sydney/Melbourne, you're still gonna be served by an Asian.

Any of you dumbass downvoters able to say otherwise?

      • Best get that 'downvoters' rage looked at by a specialist …..pronto!

      • I've seen a few more caucasian females. I know Boost juice is known to hire very young females (predominantly Caucasian) and once they get too old they have to find work elsewhere and smoothy/bubble tea places operate similarly

Hate to stereotype but first your chances getting a job at a bubble tea place increases if you're Asian and female. Rarely see males working the counter.

I am a huge bubble tea fan and tried most places.

I also worked at a bubble tea place agggeeesss ago but my experience is irrelevant now. But back then they paid my cash in hand and under minimum wage, which was gumballs in blacktown but they shut down.

I mean, the only way youll find out if they pay under the legal standards if you apply.

Oops, responded to wrong comment earlier

I feel like Gumballs just rebranded to "Summer Vibe"

      • I feel Summer Vibe is trying too hard, just seeing their Instagram, it's like….. are you a bubble tea store or a fresh fruit drink store like boost juice? I remember walking past their store in Blacktown and thinking it's just fresh fruit juice store like Boost or Top Juice, last thing I would assume they sell is bubble tea.

  • The minimum wage will be likely based on the Fast Food Award. The award contains laws that apply to fast food workers- such as working at a bubble tea store. https://awardviewer.fwo.gov.au/award/show/ma000003#P832_7102…

The rates are different depending which day you work and if you are casual (rather than part time or full time) and whether you are an adult. Look at the table in schedule A in the link / award.

These are the minimum rates, if your employer pays you less you should keep an accurate copy of each shift you work and how much you were paid.
