What is the deal with M-Discs?

Hi.

Are M-disc still relevant? Not many places sell them and they go for super high prices.

I can only find 100GB versions. Does anyone know where/when they go on sale.

I am sorting, editing, and archiving a huge photo library and want as many formats for backup. I have 3.5HDD x2, SSD x1 and want to store a copy on disc off site. M-disc make sense for that.
Cheers,
