So I Bought a Hilux - What Engine Oil Do You Use?

Hello OzBarginers, long time poster/ person that enjoys the community here…

Any Hilux owners 2015 - 2022 out there on Ozbargain, I am curious to know what engine oil you run and at what price you normally stockpile.

I noticed the Supercheap avoids selling the 10L tubs…

What did you do with the Model T?

    • He converted it to electric….

      • Ah yes, Ben did the conversion.

  • Owned a Hilux for around 20 years, traveled all over The High County.

I’ve only ever used Penrite 15w-50 in it ….

Lots hope he doesn't otherwise he will cook his DPF.

      • Pnerite 5-30 :D

        • But even then theres so many variants etc
Fortunately I don't work at supercheap anymore so I don't need to spend 10 minutes convincing people why x standard is recommended by the manufacturer haha.

And kit-out with recovery gear enough to pull a tank stuck in sand even though you only drive around the city and the bubs.

Oh and don't forget those LED light bars all around.

And make sure to only ever use high beam.

I think you'll find Hilux owners pale PALE P.A.L.E in comparison the the average Ford Ranger driver… the nicer the Ranger the bigger the "…………."

          you fill in the gaps

    • I hope you don't drive around tailgating people.

I refuse to believe he drives anything other than a "good olde American automobile".

Just pick one of the major brands with a grade that matches what the engine requires according to the manufacturer, buy one or two services worth when it’s on special. It’s not hard.

Anyone who tells you brand XXXX is superior to everything else is talking out their rear orifice and is likely sponsored or receives the biggest discount on that particular brand.

  • I look forward to seeing you 10cm from my rear bumper while I'm doing 90 on the M4.

    • +1

I have a 4WD and use the M4. Fortunately I drive 3 car lengths from your rear bumper. Not ALL 4WDs are (profanity).

I always drive at or above the speed limit, and drive with traffic, and NEVER get tail gated, except when its some crackhead changing lanes every 10 seconds. Impatient people will always exist, you can choose to piss them off, leave gaps in traffic and drive under the already absurdly low speed limits, dont cry if you get tailgated.

        • +1

You guys can remove me from the bumper tail gater i am too fragile to want to hit anyone. I don't carry my max trax and shovel around in local sydney. I usually avoid getting bogged on the M4

          • @George Washington: Other people are adventurous and get out to the bush on their days off, and your mocking them because you are jealous? Im lost

        • +1

dont cry if you get tailgated.

And don't cry when you're at fault for not only your car but my car too in a crash mate.

          • @coffeeinmyveins: Thats how the law works, protecting the guy sitting in the right hand lane doing 10 under, with 50 cars piled up behind him having to brake and accelerate constantly. All the accidents, distress, frustration, and needless traffic generated by one incompetent and oblivious driver with the smug protection of the law. The only solution to such a messed up problem is to tailgate to try to correct such poor driving etiquette. Its not a perfect solution, but better than nothing. The police are too busy with speed camera infringements to boost their bonuses for the year, to worry about actual driver education and safety.

      • Just going through this old thread.
        If you're travelling at 90kmh, that's 25 metres/second.
If the average length of a Ute is around 5 metres, then you're 0.6 seconds behind the car in front.
Human response time to a visual hazard is at least 0.3 seconds
Safe drivers leave about 2 to 3 seconds.

If it's diesel it will have a DPF so you must use low SAPS oil. Preferably full synthetic. Non SAPS will destroy the DPF and they ain't cheap to replace.

      Finally a comment worth reading.

Correct, the N80 Hilux has a DPF so needs C2 grade oil - 0W-30 or 5W-30. I believe Valvoline is available at SCA, I use Penrite only because it seems to be available more places where I live - Bursons and Repco. Best you will find is the 7/10L for about +/- $10 per litre, generally Repco 25-35% off sale on oil. Any better price than that is good, I generally don't stockpile too much, service interval is 10000 kms, I only do about 15000 kms per year. Use the genuine oil filters from Toyota, for the small difference in price aftermarket is not worth it and it is a 2 micron filter.

Be aware the drain plug is in a c#%t of a spot, you will need a flexible funnel or one cut funny so you don't pi$$ oil everywhere - source, have done this more than once.
