Transport on NYE in Sydney after The Fireworks

We are planning to watch the New Year's Eve fireworks in Sydney. Having never been to Circular Quay on NYE I had a few questions.

  • How much time does it take for the crowd to clear out? 1 hour? I was thinking if we plan that we leave around 1-1.30am, that should be sufficient buffer for the immediate public transport chaos.
  • Do buses, ferries and train run on a different timetable? For e.g the last ferry to Manly is usually before 1am, do ferries operate late? Asking as planning to book a stay at Manly or somewhere in the Northern beaches.
  • Otherwise, if staying around CBD would taxi be a better option or after 1.30am trains or buses will be practically possible?

Just couldn't find any good blogs that explain that experience. Everyone talks about how to come and vantage points, but didn't find much help on what happens afterwards.

    Tansport

    Natural or fake ?

    • Thanks but doesn't have details and timetables, tried to find 2019 or previous years but didn't go into details

See detailed public transport information including service changes is at transportnsw.info closer to the date.

  • Doubt the crowd still disperse that much in an hour or 90mins at Circular Quay as it's a common night spot, has that McDonald's and the just generally is a place people mingle around at night.

There will usually be extended transport hours and frequency so shouldn't be an issue.
Not sure if taxi will be as efficient and mind you the cost will be higher than the PT options.

  • don't head north. My partner is at Crows Nest and we usually have to walk home. PT is fubar

    • Wow. Thanks.

      • It's only about 5km and helps get the booze processed

  • 30% of the crowd will leave immediately and their will be a big rush on all transport forms. Buses, trains and ferries only have a few more schedules services just after the fireworks. The other 70% will hang out at bars in the CBD with numbers slowly declining until sunrise. 1.30-2.00am is usually fine to get uber/taxi but there will still be lots of people around.

      usually fine to get uber

can't wait to read about the uber fares in the paper next day.

      • Part PT part uber is what I was thinking

        • You might need to take out a loan to pay for the Uber.

          • @jv: How much surge charging? I was prepared for 5x

You haven't booked your NYE accommodation yet? You should have done that back in 2021

    • Finding it the hard way now

      • Maybe forget about this year (unless you have visitors) and start planning for 2023 instead

        • I am seeing the same rates for next year if looking at hotels in CBD

          • @archieduh: Too late for 2023, try 2027.

            • @jv: Climate change says we won't make it till then.

              • @archieduh: Maybe book the top of Sydney tower, so you can be above the water level.

I've not been out in the city on NYE for a long time, but my memory is of it just being a dog's breakfast to get home.

From the moment those fireworks stop going off, tens (hundreds?) of thousands of people descend onto cab ranks, Uber and similar, public transport, etc. The sheer volume of people can take a couple of hours to even start to disperse.

One way or another, unless you are lucky or have arranged (costly) transport in advance, it's a waiting game. You can attempt to leave "immediately" but recognise you may not leave the city until (say) 2am or you can find whatever it is you want to do to stay entertained and try your luck after this time.

but didn't find much help on what happens afterwards.

Pretty much because of the above.

    • Yeah, i thought i am preparing in advance by posting here. Looks like there is no magic but to wait it out.

  • Are there fireworks?

    • Should be?

        You're kidding right?

Sydney would put on a fireworks show if someone farts…

  • Ferries on NYE are often suspended due to unsafe conditions (too many recreational vessels in the harbour). Manly ferries do operate but are all full, and leave people behind. I wouldn't want to rely on them for my trip home.

    • Thanks. Still out of curiosity any idea when the last one departs if they do?
